The Hills Reboot: Will Anyone Actually Watch This Thing?

MTV's reboot of The Hills sure made a lot of headlines at last week's VMAs, but whether the buzz ends there remains to be seen.

In other words, will it lead to any actual viewers?

Here, The Hollywood Gossip staff debates whether or not this latest, shameless effort to reboot and recaputre nostalgia will be a hit.

The Hills Cast Picture

IN ONE WORD, YES by Hilton Hater

Yes, The Hills revival will be a hit.

And I need just two words to explain why: Heidi and Spencer. Better yet, I need just one nickname to explain why: Speidi.

Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag entered the celebrity mainstream over a decade ago, initially appearing on The Hills as your basic wanna be A-Listers who would do anything for attention.

But that’s the thing: They would do ANYthing for attention, whether that meant trying to make it as a singer (Heidi) or stirring up every type of scandal or controversy imaginable (Spencer).

Hills Reunion

These two were Donald Trump before he became President Donald Trump: they had no shame.

They sky-rocketed to stardom just as social media was taking off, squeezing every millisecond out of their 15 Minutes of Fame and milking every comment on that platform for Likes or Dislikes.

They didn’t care and they still don’t care. Speidi was simply after attention.

That was back in 2007, however. There are millions of current MTV viewers who were too young at the time to watch or appreciate the couple’s antics.

So now that Twitter, Instagram and Facebook dominate absolutely everything at all times, we can’t fathom the heights that a rebooted Spencer and Heidi will be able to reach.

Heidi Montag Breastfeeding Gunner with Spencer Pratt

We can’t comprehend how popular (or, at least, how DISCUSSED) the duo will become in this second incarnation.

Oh, and here’s the final thing: They’re still together! They have a son! The couple that came across all those years ago as faker than Heidi’s boobs have somehow managed to find real, lasting love.

It’s sort of amazing. And it makes The Hills definitely worth watching.

NO, IT'S A BRIDGE TOO FAR by Tyler Johnson

Reboots are all the rage these days, and no one at MTV has had a fresh idea since the Clinton administration, so it should come as no surprise that the network is repackaging all its old hits.

But with The Hills, they may have gone too far.

Spencer Pratt, Crystal

After all, a second iteration of Jersey Shore makes sense - the original series was a cultural touchstone that made household names of its most colorful stars.

But The Hills?!

The closest thing that show ever had to a colorful star was Spencer Pratt, and that’s only because dude likes to wear tie-dye while fondling his collection of crystals.

If you’re lost in a fog of nostalgia, it might be easy to lose sight of the fact that The Hills overstayed its welcome well before it wrapped up its initial run.

Lauren Conrad Heidi Montag 2006 VMAs

The show’s best-loved star, Lauren Conrad, famously saw the writing on the wall and quit before the final season and split.

Not surprisingly, she won’t be back for the reboot.

Hell, one could argue that the concept behind The Hills was played out before the show even premiered. It was a spinoff of Laguna Beach, which was itself a lazy attempt to capitalize on the popularity of The O.C.

Despite all that the show became a hit, but that was likely due in part to the fact its target demo had far fewer entertainment options in those days.

So for the moment, The Hills are alive ... but my guess is they won’t be for long.

Lauren Conrad: Sucky Person GIF

THE HILLS HAVE A YES by Simon Delott

Reboots are so often reviled, fairly or unfairly.

But technically what we're talking about here is a revival, where people can wax nostalgic about a show from yesteryear and see some of their returning favorites.

So … is The Hills: New Beginnings going to be a success? Maybe so. Heidi and Spencer, who are new parents, will be returning.

You know that people are going to want to check in on two of the world's most famous hot messes in this new chapter of their lives.

The Hills Cast

Other familiar faces will be there, too, and we also should look at another revival from a similar era. Jersey Shore's comeback has been a hit.

It's not dominating our culture the way it once did, but it's making a splash in a big way, no doubt paving the way for this latest effort.

Some would say that bringing back The Hills without Lauren Conrad is like bringing back Jersey Shore without Snooki. And they're not wrong.

But while people will surely miss Lauren, who is too busy being a mom to relive her reality television days, producing a reality series has fewer expenses than traditional television.

If there's any entertainment value that these famously entertaining disasters can offer, this new series could run for a while.

Whitney Port on the Gram

GO HOME, 2007, YOU'RE DRUNK by Free Britney

Look, I don't blame MTV for wanting to revive The Hills, nor can I blame the cast members for wanting to jump on board.

There's very little risk, and what the hell else are they gonna do, come up with fresh ideas, or get real jobs, respectively?

With all due respect to the lovely Whitney Port (above) and company, obviously not. They don't exactly have a lot going on.

Availability and opportunity doesn't mean there's enough nostalgia or new, capitvating material for this to stick, though.

Crotch Shot Queens On Drugs!

The Hills dates back to when Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton were tabloid mainstays and reality TV was a novel concept.

In other words, it was a long ass time ago, and the show was more noteworthy in pioneering a genre than anything else.

A dramatized, quasi-scripted series about a real, likable person (Lauren) and her telegenic friends, frenemies and enemies (Speidi)?

That was something new and different.

Endlessly dramatic and fascinating, and just real enough to be relatable on some level, it became a pop culture staple.

Looking back, it's no surprise that this became a hit, or that it spawned hundreds of shows following that same basic formula.

But therein lies the issue:

What made The Hills groundbreaking TV has essentially become ALL TV, and too many other shows (Jersey Shore included) do it better.

A lot of the time, Hills episodes were like watching paint dry. Its chief protagonist had enough and bailed. Even Speidi's act got old.

No one has thought about The Hills or its stars in years. Years. After this initial buzz dies out, that will be the case once more.

Justin-Bobby Brescia: I’m Glad Lauren Conrad Won’t Harsh Our Vibe on The Hills Reboot!

Everything that's old is new again, and the The Hills reboot is really happening.

But Lauren Conrad won't be taking part in The Hills: New Beginnings, which leads some fans to wonder what it will be like.

Justin-Bobby Brescia does think that it will be different -- but he says that it will be better without her. Take a look.

Lauren Conrad 2016

Lauren Conrad and Lo Bosworth aren't returning for the The Hills revival.

And when TMZ asked Justin-Bobby Brescia, he definitely did not sound bothered by their absence.

"It’s a good cast," Brescia affirmed.

He then threw some definite shade in Lauren's direction.

"We’ve got all the good people left,” Brescia says.

Wow. That is indirect, but massively harsh.

Justin-Bobby Brescia Plays Music

“It’s gonna be good," Brescia affirms "Everybody’s happy."

He explains where he believes that the good cheer originates.

"There are good vibes," he says of the cast.

He says that if there wrong people were present, they could ruin the experience and the reboot for everyone involved.

"When you’ve got s--tty people running around," Brescia declares. "It creates this ambiance you don’t need."

In other words, he's saying that toxic people would make for a toxic environment.

Lauren Conrad is Pretty

It's only been a little over a year since Lauren Conrad welcomed her first child.

She is busy being a new mother.

As it happens, she is also worth something in the range of $25 million.

Some of her erstwhile costars might need that paycheck enough that they're happy to hire a sitter (looking at you, Heidi and Spencer Pratt), but if she wants to devote these years to motherhood, she can afford to.

She does not need this reboot and she will not be taking part in it.

But even if Justin-Bobby Brescia is still nursing a grudge over that time she roasted him over his army boots, she's not the only absentee on his mind.

Justin-Bobby Brescia with the Good Hair

Lo bowed out, saying that she had required "years of therapy" to recover from Laguna Beach and The Hills the first time around.

"Duh," Brescia says in response. "You could probably see that from a mile away when she first filmed, right?"

That's not exactly a charitable way to phrase it, but he explains why he's not exactly weeping in her absence.

"[She was] never a fan of mine," he says. "So…"

That sounds harsh, and it is, but we can understand why he's not beside himself.

Old feuds die hard, folks. Which is great news when you're talking about bringing back a classic reality series that helped transform the television landscape.

Lauren Conrad on The Hills

Now, don't let all of this talk about the ambiance of the show's revival fool you.

They're not actually filming yet.

But Justin-Bobby Brescia says: "Everybody’s chatting. Everybody’s smiling."

He summarizes: "Everybody’s having a good time."

That is good to hear. In the mean time,w e imagine that the show is making some final decisions -- including their rumored negotiations with Brody Jenner to invite his participation.

Here is what we know so far about who is coming back:

The Hills Reboot: Who’s In? Who’s Out?

We suppose it was only a matter of time before TV moguls started taking a cue from their counterparts in the film world and began recycling old projects for new audiences.

It started with your favorite three-camera '90s sitcoms, and now the reboot trend has expanded to reality TV.

And it should come as no surprise that MTV is leading the pack, as no one at that network has had a new idea since the Clinton administration.

First, it was Jersey Shore, and now The Hills is coming back for a brand new season pointlessly subtitled New Beginnings.

It's hard to know if this will be a hit, as the premise of a dramatized reality show about young rich people isn't as novel as it was in 2007.

At the same time, it's not a huge shock that MTV is willing to try it, or that the cast wants in ... because what else do they have going on?

Just like their East Coast equivalents, however, it seems not everyone from the SoCal squad is ready to return to a life in front of the cameras.

Here's what we know so far about the returning cast, who we might see, and who we definitely won't ...

1. LC See Ya Later

Lc aka lauren conrad
The first question on the minds of most fans is whether or not Lauren Conrad will be returning to one of the two shows that made her famous. (Lauren was also a Laguna Beach OG.)

2. Dilemma

It's hard to imagine The Hills without LC, but it's also hard to imagine Lauren -- the rare reality star who actually found post-show success -- involving herself in the drama that made the show a success.

3. Bowing Out

Those who know Lauren best say they're not surprised the businesswoman and new mom has decided not to participate in the reboot.

4. Moving On

"She’s in a different place in her life,” a source tells People magazine. “But she wants everyone to enjoy themselves. She wishes everyone the best.

5. New Priorities

“She loves being a mother and focusing on her family and on her work,” the source adds. “She has a very full and happy life.”

6. No Need For MTV

Lauren conrad and william tell are cute
The news doesn't come as much of a shock. Lauren stepped away from The Hills in the show's final season, and in the years since, she's become one of those Jessica Simpson types who makes more money selling handbags and crap than she ever did on TV.

Lauren Conrad Goes Brunette (Temporarily)

We saw a sneak peek at Lauren Conrad’s new brunette locks when she was seen on the set of a photo shoot for Harper’s Bazaar. Now the images have been released!

The fashion magazine had the California girl change up her signature blonde hair for a day-long experiment. But even a wig wasn’t enough to disguise the famous LC.

“I think initially the wig threw people off, but they figured it out."

"I felt like it only disguised me for a moment, then it made me feel like I was hiding, which made me feel silly,” Lauren Conrad told Harper’s Bazaar of the change.

Brown Haired Lauren Conrad

Lauren Conrad might have considered dying her hair dark to keep The Hills producers from for coercing her to come back on screen, but she recalls, “I went into a wig store and tried on a brown wig, and then they all laughed at me."

"All the women [who worked there] were like, ‘You look like Hannah Montana.’"

So after a day in her dark wig, Lauren Conrad had officially reached a verdict: “Day to day, I can only do blonde. Everything else makes me look sort of plain-Jane.”

Do you like Lauren's brunette look?

Lauren Conrad Tops N.Y. Times Best Seller List

Lauren Conrad was a fan favorite on Laguna Beach and The Hills. Her recent reality TV retirement has apparently done little to diminish that status.

The 23-year-old's debut novel, L.A. Candy, which draws parallels with LC's real life, has topped the New York Times Best Seller list - for two weeks!

"If someone said to me five years ago that I would one day make the New York Times Best Seller list I wouldn't have believed it," Conrad said.

"I am so honored that it is now a reality."

Although she is used to the spotlight, she's still in awe over her literary accomplishment, especially given that this is her first foray into fiction: "It was such a compliment to be included in something with such established names."

L.A. Candy is loosely based on the life of Lauren Conrad, and follows Jane Roberts, a 19-year-old girl who moves to Hollywood and ends up as the star of her own reality show, surrounded by all sorts of interesting characters.

Lauren Conrad’s Hair: Prettier as a Blonde or Brunette?

Not to worry, Lauren Conrad lovers. It's just a wig.

But the California blonde nevertheless gave up her signature hairstyle for a long brown bob – albeit only for one day while posing for a magazine.

"I got to wear a brown wig all day," LC Tweeted.

"It [was] fun though ... Kinda like playing dress up."

What do you think? Does Lauren Conrad look better when she wigs out - or with the traditional, blonde locks we've come to love over the last three years?

Lauren Conrad Stays Dry, Visits Late Night

Not even the unusually rainy June weather on the East Coast could stop the beautiful Lauren Conrad from smiling as she made the talk show rounds this week!

The umbrella-toting author and former star of The Hills stopped by The Early Show and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to talk about her first novel, L.A. Candy.

Of course, she dished a little on the show she used to be on too.

Here she is making a rainy arrival ...

Under My Umbrella

We would stand under that umbrella any day.

Here's Lauren Conrad's interview with Jimmy Fallon, in which he and LC poke fun at her signature facial expressions, asks her about her book tour and thanks her, on behalf of America, for creating the gruesome entity universally known as Speidi.

No talk of ricocheting babies, but maybe that's a good thing ...

Lauren Conrad: Spencer Pratt Apology Was Fake

Fans of The Hills wondering why Lauren Conrad didn't say a word when Spencer Pratt called her to apologize on The Hills now have their answer:

She wasn't even on the other line.

Interviewed on The View this morning, LC was asked about the call from Spencer Pratt, in which he said he was sorry for spreading the sex tape rumors about Conrad and asked her to please attend his upcoming wedding to Heidi Montag.

Fake, fake, fake, Lauren Conrad says.

Put on the spot, Conrad hesitated briefly before throwing the show under the bus, but ultimately did so, admitting her contempt for the program that made her a star for the past five seasons, and expressing no regrets about leaving it.

That the show is about as "real" as Heidi Montag's rack is hardly news, but this is the most blatant admission by a cast member yet. Here's the interview, in which Lauren discusses her new novel, L.A. Candy, and Stephanie Pratt's bulimia ...

Lauren Conrad: Boo, Plastic Surgery! Yay, Fashion!

Unlike her former co-star and friend Heidi Montag, Lauren Conrad won't be going under the knife anytime soon – and it's all in the name of fashion.

"You know what, I prefer a flatter-chested look," Conrad, 23, tells Access Hollywood. "That's just kind of me. I think it's more of a fashion look."

"If you look at a lot of high-fashion models and things like that, they're always you know, a little flatter ... I like the way clothes fit better."

"Big boobs?" LC adds, "No I mean ... that's what wonder bras are for!"

Amen to that, LC. Take that, Heidi.

Sweet as L.A. Candy

While The Hills star says she doesn't have any plans for plastic surgery, she would not rule out the possibility of getting Botox in the future.

"I'm 23, I think that I'm good for a little bit," she explained at a release party for her novel L.A. Candy. "But, I don't know, maybe later on."

Despite how well things are going to beau Kyle Howard, Lauren Conrad says she has no plans of settling down and starting a family anytime soon.

"I'm not someone who feels like a pressure to get into that," says LC. "I think that I'm still pretty young and I've got a while to do all I want to do."

"I think that when you have kids, it's all about them," Conrad adds. "So, I think that I need to be selfish for a little bit and do it all about me."

We just hope no more babies get thrown at her.

Conan O’Brien Admits Hills Addiction, Lauren Conrad Describes Ricocheting Babies

Last night on The Tonight Show, Conan O'Brien tried to defend his obsessive viewing of The Hills by pawning it off on his wife, and its retired star, Lauren Conrad, talked about some of her previous encounters with fans of the show.

LC, who was there on her L.A. Candy book tour before the conversation turned to more important topics, discussed a time when a crazed fan literally threw a baby at her.

In case you were wondering, babies do not ricochet.

Here's an excerpt of Lauren Conrad's talk with Conan O'Brien - and Curb Your Enthusiasm star Larry David - about that particular fan run-in:

Conan: So she threw her baby at you?
Lauren: But my back was to her, and it ricocheted off of me, and I was like-
Conan: Babies don't ricochet!
Lauren: It did, though!
Conan: I have had two babies. They do not ricochet. They hit and slide.
Lauren: But I was moving. So it ricocheted.
Conan: That's one of the stranger stories I've ever heard.
Larry: I'd like to steal that story for my show!

Lauren Conrad Embarks on “L.A. Candy” Book Tour

Looking gorgeous as ever, former Hills star Lauren Conrad hosted the launch of her new book L.A. Candy at Thompson Hotel on Wednesday in Beverly Hills.

The retired reality TV star hopes to her her book adapted for the small screen: "It’s one of my hopes," said Conrad, 23, of a televised version of Candy.

"We're going to start working on that when I get back from my book tour."

Here's the star at last night's event ...

Lauren Conrad: L.A. Candy

As much as she complained about being on The Hills towards the end, would Lauren Conrad be open to a return - or field new offers for reality TV forays?

"I asked not to hear them," she said. "I said, 'Don't tell me anything.' So, problem solved, and I got to enjoy time away. But my two months is up now."

She's also not giving up her fashion collection: "I have my line at Kohl's but I'm also working on putting back together my original line," she told E! News.

One thing she won't be doing? Checking out Kristin Cavallari's debut on The Hills. "I probably won't watch it," Conrad said. "I'm not a huge TV person."

Somewhat ironic from a person made famous by TV, but more power to her. Click to enlarge more Lauren Conrad pictures from last night's book event ...

Lauren Conrad Book Review: Not Terrible!

Whoever ghosted Lauren Conrad's first novel L.A. Candy, isn't half bad!

At least that's the conclusion of the New York Daily News, which says LC's literary debut "leaves fans something to hold onto beyond memories."

Conrad, seemingly ably assisted by a collaborator, tells the story of Jane Roberts, a young beauty most notable for her sweet nature and innocence.

Sound familiar?

She moves to L.A. with her BFF from kindergarten, gorgeous, smart–mouthed Scarlett. Soon enough, they meet a producer making a new reality show.

The two are perfect for "L.A. Candy"!

Beautiful Conrad

'CANDY' GIRL: LC's first novel is ripe with allusions to The Hills.

Note that while Lauren Conrad is an aspiring celebrity fashion designer, Jane's ambition is to be an events planner. In fiction, creativity is everything.

The first night they're miked up and sent into a club, camera crew in tow, they run into a blond "wearing more makeup and hair products than clothing."

Turns out she's wearing a microphone too.

Madison, the wily one, introduces her friend, Gaby, who's so stupid she shouldn't be crossing streets without adult supervision. OMG, it's, like, so on.

Cameras follow the four everywhere (As Lauren Conrad once said: 'I wake up in the middle of the night and I think I'm being filmed') and Jane's uber-beyotch boss is suddenly all encouraging of this new phenomenon.

She begins to question what's real about her new "reality."

It seems the only person who hasn't signed a release form to get close to her is Braden, a struggling actor who she can't resist. But he's confusing her.

Brody Jenner is rolling in his grave right now.

This other girl, Willow, with whom he has a complicated relationship. So naturally Jane takes up with his best friend, Jesse, the baddest of boys.

Jason Wahler is rolling in his grave right now.

Jane emerges as the star of the show as Madison seethes, running to a vile editor of Gossip magazine to dish some dirt on Jane and score a profile in return.

Heidi Montag is rolling in her grave right now.

As the Braden/Jesse situation blows up, Madison strikes. Dear, trusting Jane doesn't see it coming. How naive is she? As much as she needs to be to play the heroine in a story created (term used loosely) by Conrad, who has her own brand of savvy.

NOTE: No reality stars were harmed in the making of this novel. And Conrad has a future to forge, with two more books to come, and an iron in the fire.

Spencer Pratt, Heidi PrattJason Wahler ShirtlessBrody Jenner Shirtless

Fictionalized versions of Speidi, Jason and Brody appear to be present in Lauren Conrad's new young adult fiction series. Hey, should make it entertaining if nothing else.
