James Karen, Actor You Know From Everything, Dies at 94

James Karen, a veteran actor with an extensive big screen resume, passed away this week at his home in Florida, according to multuple outlets.

He was 94 years old.

James Karen

Karen died with over 200 movies to his credit, but he's probably best known for his role as the developer Mr. Teague in the modern horror classic Poltergeist.

The long-time star also appeared in Return of the Living Dead, Invaders from Mars, China Syndrome, and Wall Street -- among MANY other films.

One of the best known character actors of all-time, Karen once joked that nobody knew his name, yet everybody knew his face because he "did so much damn work."

Actually, he may not have been joking about that.

Mostly known for his work in the movie world, Karen also played a key part on the finale of Little House on the Prairie and he worked with director Oliver Stone on three occasions:

1. As Lynch, the office manager at Jackson Steinem, where Charlie Sheen’s stockbroker character works, in Wall Street.

2. As Secretary of State William Rogers in Nixon.

2. As a Miami Sharks executive in Any Given Sunday.

Karen was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and served in the United States Air Force during World War II.

Following a stint on Broadway, Karen moved to the land of television when he starred as Dr. Burke on As the World Turns and was the original Lincoln Tyler on All My Children.

Along with starring in thousands of commercials, Karen also worked as the TV and radio spokesman (“Why pay more?) for Pathmark, an East Coast supermarket chain that was liquidated in 2015.

On the personal front:

Karen was married to the late Susan Reed, the beloved folk singer and zither player, from 1958 until their divorce in 1967.

The couple shared a son named Reed, whose godfather is the legendary Buster Keaton, a very close friend of Karen's throughout his adult life.

In the horror genre, other notable movies in which Karen played a part include:

Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster, Poltergeist, Invaders from Mars, The Willies, The Unborn, Piranha, Apt Pupil and Mulholland Drive.

And other television roles include:

Seinfeld, The Larry Sanders Show, Dallas, The Golden Girls, L.A. Law, Murphy Brown and The Waltons.

In the cult classic The Return of the Living Dead, Karen starred as the manager of a medical warehouse who inadvertently releases a gas that re-animates the dead.

He said it was the most fun he ever had in making a movie, saying in 2006 that he had some say in how the character died:

“It was the deal where he figures out he’s becoming a zombie and decides to incinerate himself in the crematorium.

"He kisses his wedding ring as he goes in. It was a very emotional scene, but it also got me out of being one of the rain-drenched zombies milling around outside the place at the end of the film.

"I didn’t really want to do all that muddy stuff.

The Hollywood Reporter first confirmed Karen's death.

May he rest in peace.

Al Matthews Dies: Actor Famous for "Aliens" Role Was 75

Actor Al Matthews, best known for his memorable role in the film Aliens, has died.

The iconic actor had retired to Spain, which is where he passed away.

He was 75.

Al Matthews in Aliens

75-year-old Al Matthews passed away at his home, according to Spanish newspaper El Pais.

Matthews' home was located in Orihuela Costa, in the Spanish Mediterranean province of Alicante.

He had retired to Spain in 2005.

Responders found Matthews when a neighbor called emergency services.

An autopsy is expected for the late actor.

Al Matthews 02

Matthews is, of course, best known for his role as Gunnery Sergeant Apone in James Cameron's 1986 classic, Aliens.

In the science fiction film, he starred alongside living legend Sigourney Weaver.

He delivered a truly famous line.

"Alright sweethearts, what are you waiting for, breakfast in bed? A day in the Marine Corps is like a day on the farm," he said on screen.

The quote continues: "Every meal’s a banquet! Every paycheck a fortune! Every formation a parade! I love the corps!"

Al Matthews in 2016

That may have been Matthews' most famous role, but was far from the only one. In fact, he appeared in over 30 films.

Matthews portrayed a fire chief in Superman III.

He played General Tudor in the cult classic The Fifth Element.

He also enjoyed success in the United Kingdom, where he had a role on the UK series, Grange Hill.

And speaking of his work across the pond, in 1975, his song, "Fool," reached #16 on the UK Singles chart.

Despite his retirement, Matthews reprised his legendary role as Sgt. Apone in the 2013 video game, Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Al Matthews 04

Perhaps part of what made Matthews' role in Aliens so iconic and powerful -- aside from his acting skills -- was that he had been a real life marine in Vietnam.

"I spent six years in the United States Marine Corps;" Matthews shared on his personal website. "I hold thirteen combat awards and decorations, including two purple hearts."

He reveals: "I was the first black Marine in the 1st Marine Division in Vietnam to be meritoriously promoted to the rank of sergeant."

That is one hell of an achievement.

His website blurb concludes: "I served with Kilo Battery, Fourth Battalion, 11th Marines, 1st Marine Division, of that I am very proud."

Rest in peace, Al Matthews.

Sally Field Pays Heartfelt Tribute to Burt Reynolds

Hollywood has lost a legend.

And Sally Field has lost a true love.

As previously reported, Burt Reynolds died on Thursday of a heart attack, passing away at his home in Jupiter, Florida.

The legendary actor was 82 years old.

Sally Field and Burt Reynolds

Upon learning of his death, a number of entertainment industry heavyweights have expressed their sympathy and their sorrow (scroll down), but one name stands out from all the rest right now.

Sally Field met Reynolds on the set of the 1977 smash hit comedy, Smokey and the Bandit.

The actress and the actor would date for five years... while also co-starring in several more films, including Smokey and the Bandit II, The End and Hooper.

Although they split for good in 1982, Reynolds recounted the romance over 30 years later in an interview with Vanity Fair, referring to Field as "the love of my life."

And it's clear now that Reyonds was never far from the two-time Oscar winner's heart, either.

Burt Reynolds Snapshot

“There are times in your life that are so indelible, they never fade away,” Field said in a statement this afternoon, adding of Reynolds:

“They stay alive, even forty years later. My years with Burt never leave my mind. He will be in my history and my heart, for as long as I live. Rest, Buddy."

Reynolds' manager, Erik Kritzer, confirmed the passing of this big screen icon, while his niece, Nancy Lee Hess, said the following on Thursday:

"My uncle was not just a movie icon; he was a generous, passionate and sensitive man who was dedicated to his family, friends, fans and acting students.

"He has had health issues, however, this was totally unexpected. He was tough. Anyone who breaks their tailbone on a river and finishes the movie is tough. And that’s who he was.

"My uncle was looking forward to working with Quentin Tarantino (in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and the amazing cast that was assembled."

In recent years, Reynolds used a cane while out in public. His last appearance in front of a big crowd took place at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival.

In the wake of his passing, nearly everyone across Hollywood chimed in with a story about Reynolds or with a few thoughts about the highly-respected actor. To wit:

Arnold Schwarzenegger: Burt Reynolds was one of my heroes. He was a trailblazer. He showed the way to transition from being an athlete to being the highest paid actor, and he always inspired me. He also had a great sense of humor - check out his Tonight Show clips. My thoughts are with his family.

Reba McEntire: My good friend has started a new journey. Rest in my peace my friend. I’ll never forget the wonderful times we spent together.

Sylvester Stallone: A sad day, my friend BURT REYNOLDS Has passed away. I remember him back in 1979, he always reminded me that I should’ve cast him as Colonel Trautman in FIRST BLOOD , I said that’s impossible, because you’re too expensive and too famous, and probably tougher than Rambo ! He laughed , He had a great sense of humor and I enjoyed his company so much... RIP Buddy

burt tributes

Goldie Hawn: There is only One Burt Reynolds. One! I loved our time our laughs and fun. Now your angels will giggle at your silly jokes as they hold you lightly as you rest dear one.

Kevin Bacon: Im 19.  I get a few lines in a movie. The megastar on set was really nice and cool to this punk actor(me) for no reason. The director called me before the movie came out to tell me I had hit the cutting room floor. But I never forgot that Star. Thanks Burt. RIP.

Paul Wesley: Burt Reynolds was one of the kindest and most generous people I have ever worked with. He took me under his wing when I was first starting out as an actor and offered friendship, advice and guidance. I’ll never forget how much that meant to me.

Michael Chiklis: I owe my career, at least in part, to the great Burt Reynolds. Heartbroken to learn of his passing. He was one of a kind. A fun loving, charismatic talent who did many good deeds quietly, without personal expectation but rather out of the kindness of his extraordinary heart. RIP.

May Burt Reynolds rest in peace.

Shaun Weiss, Ex-Mighty Ducks Star, Arrested for Bizarre Behavior

How the Mighty have fallen.

Literally and depressingly so.

Shaun Weiss, the child actor who portrayed goalie Greg Goldberg in The Mighty Duck film franchise, was arrested over the weekend for public intoxication.

Shaun Weiss Mug Shot

According to TMZ, People Magazine and other outlets, Weiss was allegedly high on drugs and acting very strangely with a flashlight at the time he was taken into custody.

He was picked up by police officers who discovered Weiss and a trio of othermen outside of a closed business complex in Oroville, California.

After speaking with the others in his contigent, authorities determined that Weiss had to have been on some kind of controlled substance.

The ex-actor was held behind bars for a few hours until he sobered up and was then released without charges.

Reports indicate that Weiss was “witty” while in custody and no blood sample has been ordered.

It sounds like Weiss caught a break and will not face any legal repercussion for his bizarre and possibly dangerous actions.

weiss as goalie

The star was also arrested last year possession of meth.

That incident came just five days after he had been sentenced to 150 days in jail for stealing $151 worth of stuff from an electronics store.

He spent just 12 days at the time behind bars due to overcrowding, with his manager saying the stint would serve as a wake-up call for the actor.

Sadly, though, this appears to not have been the case.

In a Facebook post, the Oroville Police Department said Weiss was arrested on suspicion of “intoxication only” and “no further criminal proceedings are desired at this time.”

Still, it's his depressed and disheveled mug shot that has fans concerned.

weiss

"Of all the depressing mugshots in all the world, this one hit me the hardest," one social media user wrote in response to the photo above.

Added another:

"Seeing pictures of Shaun Weiss are really sad. I grew up loving The Mighty Ducks and even to this day my friends and I make Goldberg references. I hope he gets the support and help he needs."

And another:

"Damn, this is really sad. #ShaunWeiss was such a talented actor in his day. I knew of Weiss from his hilarious role in Heavyweights before I saw him in Mighty Ducks and Freaks and Geeks. I hope he finds #recovery soon."

We strongly agree.

In addition to the Mighty Ducks franchise, which featured three popular installments, Weiss also has had roles in Heavyweights, Freaks and Geeks, The King of Queens and The Tony Danza Show.

James Gunn: Dropped from Guardians of the Galaxy Franchise Over Offensive Tweets

James Gunn has been fired as director of Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

The decision to remove Gunn from the project arrived on Friday after conservative uncovered old tweets by Gunn in which the filmmaker joked about controversial topics such as pedophilia and rape.

James Gunn

Gunn has been an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump over the past several months and, some believe, had been targeted by Republicans such as Jack Posobiec.

But that doesn't change the fact that Gunn did write the Tweets in question.

"The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him," Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn said in a statement announcing Gunn's departure.

Gunn directed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and was hired awhile back to helm its follow-up.

The very old Tweets at the center of this scandal have since been deleted, but Internet users posted screenshots that appear to show the director had written jokes about assault and other subjects.

A sample: “Laughter is the best medicine. That’s why I laugh at people with AIDS.”

Another: "The best thing about being raped is when you’re done being raped and it’s like ‘whew this feels great, not being raped!'"

On Thursday, in response to this growing scandal, Gunn Tweeted:

"Many people who have followed my career know, when I started, I viewed myself as a provocateur, making movies and telling jokes that were outrageous and taboo.

"As I have discussed publicly many times, as I’ve developed as a person, so has my work and my humor."

He continued:

"It’s not to say I’m better, but I am very, very different than I was a few years ago; today I try to root my work in love and connection and less in anger.

"My days saying something just because it’s shocking and trying to get a reaction are over."

Most of the inappropriate messages were sent in 2008 and 2009.

They were dug up by conservative outlet The Daily Caller.

Gunn issued a statement on Friday afternoon, saying that he "regretted" the tweets in question and stressed that "they don't reflect the person I am today."

gunn apology

The director added in his lengthy response to the flap:

Regardless of how much time has passed, I understand and accept the business decisions taken today.

Even these many years later, I take full responsibility for the way I conducted myself then.

All I can do now, beyond offering my sincere and heartfelt regret, is to be the best human being I can be: accepting, understanding, committed to equality, and far more thoughtful about my public statements and my obligations to our public discourse.

To everyone inside my industry and beyond, I again offer my deepest apologies. Love to all.

Gunn has been penning the script for Guardians 3, and the film was expected to begin shooting in Atlanta in the fall for an expected 2020 release date.

He had been keeping fans apprised of his progress via social media messages such as the following:

Marvel has not yet announced a replacement for Gunn.

Do you think he deserved to be fired for these Tweets?

Tab Hunter Dies; Hollywood Legend and Gay Icon Was 86

Tab Hunter, the long-time Hollywood heartthrob who portrayed Joe Hardy in the film Damn Yankees!, died Sunday might in Santa Barbara.

He was 86 years old.

Tab Hunter

Considered a fan favorite of movie fans in the 1950s, Hunter passed away from a blood clot that led to a heart attack, according to his romantic partner, Allan Glaser.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Glaser said Hunter's death was "unexpected and sudden."

Elsewhere, a Facebook account linked to the star also announced his passing with a message that read as follows:

"SAD NEWS: Tab passed away tonight three days shy of his 87th birthday.

"Please honor his memory by saying a prayer on his behalf. He would have liked that."

As part of his impressive resume, Hunter also recorded a number-one record and starred in two outlandish films with the drag queen Divine.

This last career achievement is notable for the following reason...

tabfb

After many decades of silence, Hunter confirmed long-gestating rumors about his homosexuality in his autobiography, Tab Hunter Confidential: The Making of a Movie Star, which was published in 2005.

He penned the memoir and made the personal admission after learning that someone else was planning to out him in a separate book.

Back in his professional prime, Hunter was more than just a leading man.

Due to his blonde hair and his physique, the actor covered numerous teen magazines and was even the main face (errrr, body?) of a 2000 book titled "Shirtless! The Hollywood Male Physique."

After Hunter beat out James Dean and Paul Newman to play a young Marine in Raoul Walsh's Battle Cry (1955), Warner Bros. picked up his option and signed him to a seven-year contract.

From there, he appeared in The Girl He Left Behind (1956) and Burning Hills (1956).

th

In 1958, Hunter was tabbed to play the central role in the big screen adaption of Damn Yankees! and then his career truly took off.

Long after he stopped anchoring movies, however, Hunter returned to the news after he came out of the closet.

He wrote at the time that he kept his homosexuality under wraps all those years ago because it was simply unheard of for a gay man to be a movie star.

“When you’re under contract to a studio,” he wrote, “your job is to do as they say. If you have a job, do your job.”

“I knew what I was,” Hunter told People Magazine in 2005. “I just never talked about it.”

Hunter and Glaser were together for over 30 years.

hunter

"If I had come out during my acting career in the 1950s, I would not have had a career," Hunter said in an October 2017 interview, adding:

"Not much in Hollywood has changed in 60 years. I really didn't talk about my sexuality until I wrote my autobiography.

"My film career had long since been over by then. I believe one's sexuality is one's own business. I really don't go around discussing it. Call me 'old school' on that topic."

A feature documentary about him, also titled Tab Hunter Confidential, was released in 2015 and produced by Glaser.

May Tab Hunter rest in peace.

What do YOU think?

Did the right people take home the right awards?

MTV Movie & TV Awards: Who Won Big?!?

Tiffany Haddish was the big winner at the MTV Movie & TV Awards.

That's what happens when you wear a Meghan Markle-inspired wedding dress on stage and joke about the Kardashians:

That family is basically the Star Wars franchise.

They make  a ton of movie, a new one is always popping up and they’re ruled by a bossy overlord who sleeps in a mask and she loves black men.

mtv people

But Haddish simply served as the host of this ceremony.

Who were the REAL winners within the world of television and film?

Margot Kidder: Lois Lane Actress Dies at 69

Margot Kidder rose to fame when she played Lois Lane, playing opposite Christopher Reeve in the 1978 Superman film that captured imaginations across the globe.

Tragically, she passed away on Sunday.

Margot was 69 years old.

Margot Kidder

TMZ reports that Margot Kidder passed away at home in Montana.

That much is known thanks to a statement from the spokesperson at Franzen-Davis Funeral Home in Livingston, Montana.

Her cause of death, however, has yet to be reported.

After three marriages, Kidder had remained single since the 1980s.

She is survived by her only daughter, Maggie McGuane, and by two grandchildren.

Margot Kidder Photo

Canadian by birth, Margot Kidder took on a number of smaller acting roles before being catapulted to fame in the 1978 Superman film.

She would then go on to reprise her role of Lois Lane in the ensuing sequels.

She also took on other film roles, most notably in horror films like Amityville Horror and Black Christmas.

After a car crash in 1990, she was unable to work for years, which resulted in financial problems.

Nonetheless, her film legacy lives on, and she is mourned by countless fans.

Margot Kidder Image

Additionally, she continued working up until this very year. TMZ notes that two of her roles have yet to be aired.

She had bipolar disorder.

In April of 1996, Kidder suffered a particularly severe manic episode, following the crushing disappointment of having years of work on her memoir undone by a virus.

She disappeared for four days, and was ultimately found by a neighbor.

Following that incident, she became an outspoken activist for mental health awareness and treatments.

Margot Kidder Picture

Kidder was an outspoken anti-war activist and advocate for environmental responsibility.

She was naturalized as a US citizen in 2005 and moved to Montana, though she continued to fly out to L.A. and other locations for acting work.

No matter which actress you believes did the best portrayal of Lois Lane -- for there have been a number of them -- it was Kidder who paved the way for the role in the iconic movie.

We do not know when her cause of death will be revealed.

In the mean time, our thoughts are with her daughter, grandchildren, and other loved ones as they mourn this tragic loss.

Kidder was a rare talent and she is sorely missed.

Verne Troyer is Hopefully in a "Better Place," Mike Myers Says

Over the past few hours, many people who knew Verne Troyer well have reacted to the sad news of his passing.

As previously reported, Troyer died on Saturday at the age of 49.

Verne Troyer is Dead

The tragic development came mere days after many outlets also reported that Troyer had been hospitalized due to excessive drinking and what many believe had been a suicide attempt.

No cause of death had been revealed at the time of this writing.

Of all the tributes posted on Troyer's honor, however, the most noteworthy and heartbreaking comes from Mike Myers.

The 54-year old co-starred with Troyer in the Austin Powers franchise, portraying Dr. Evil to Troyer's Mini-Me. It was the role for which Troyer would forever be best known.

“Verne was the consummate professional and a beacon of positivity for those of us who had the honor of working with him," Myers said in a statement obtained by Entertainment Weekly on Saturday.

He added:

"It is a sad day, but I hope he is in a better place. He will be greatly missed.

Troyer’s major acting break came in 1999 due to the role of Mini-Me in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.

He reprised this role in the 2002 sequel, Austin Powers in Goldmember.

The actor had reportedly battled alcoholism for years and had checked into rehab on several occasions.

Alas, he never received the help he so badly needed.

Said Troyer's family in a statement on Saturday afternoon:

"It is with great sadness and incredibly heavy hearts to write that Verne passed away today. Verne was an extremely caring individual.

"He wanted to make everyone smile, be happy, and laugh. Anybody in need, he would help to any extent possible."

On April 2, Troyer - who was born with achondroplasia dwarfism and listed at 2’8″ - was rushed to the hospital for a “reported poisoning.”

The Los Angeles City Fire Department confirmed to People Magazine that they were called to the actor’s North Hollywood home and that Troyer was “extremely upset, drunk and suicidal" at the scene.

We expect more to be revealed about his cause of death in the days ahead.

For now, a statement on Troyer's Instagram page concludes as follows:

During this recent time of adversity he was baptized while surrounded by his family. The family appreciates that they have this time to grieve privately.

Depression and Suicide are very serious issues.

You never know what kind of battle someone is going through inside. Be kind to one another. And always know, it’s never too late to reach out to someone for help.

Over the past few years, Troyer became known for his appearances in reality television.

The troubled actor had stints on Celebrity Juice, Celebrity Wife Swap, and The Surreal Life.

May he rest in peace.

R. Lee Ermey Dies; Full Metal Jacket Star Was 74

R. Lee Ermey, a Golden Globe-nominated actor likely best known for his role as Gunnery Sgt. Hartman in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, passed away on Sunday morning from complications of pneumonia.

He was 74 years old.

R. Lee Ermey

The sad piece of news was confirmed via Ermey official twitter account by his longtime manager, Bill Rogin, who wrote the following:

"It is with deep sadness that I regret to inform you all that R. Lee Ermey ("The Gunny") passed away this morning from complications of pneumonia.

"He will be greatly missed by all of us. Semper Fi, Gunny. Godspeed."

Ermey was a Marine himself for 11 years, having retired from the service in 1971.

He was a staff sergeant who served in Vietnam and Okinawa, Japan and who was later awarded the honorary rank of gunnery sergeant.

Equipped with this real-life experience, Ermey often portrayed military and law-enforcement figures, including the voice of Sarge, the leader of the little green army men in the Toy Story movies; Sheriff Hoyt in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake (2003), and a police captain in Se7en (1995).

On Ermey's Facebook page, meanwhile, Rogin added more thoughts about the star.

This is what he wrote:

He will be greatly missed by all of us.

It is a terrible loss that nobody was prepared for. He has meant so much to so many people. And, it is extremely difficult to truly quantify all of the great things this man has selflessly done for, and on behalf of, our many men and women in uniform.

He has also contributed many iconic and indelible characters on film that will live on forever. Gunnery Sergeant Hartman of Full Metal Jacket fame was a hard and principled man.

The real R. Lee Ermey was a family man, and a kind and gentle soul. He was generous to everyone around him.

And, he especially cared deeply for others in need.

There are many Gunny's, but this one was OURS. And, we will honor his memory with hope and kindness. Please support your men and women in uniform.

That's what he wanted most of all.

A bit more background:

Ermey studied criminology and drama at the University of Manila after his time in the military, starting his acting career as a Marine drill instructor in 1978's The Boys in Company C.

Francis Ford Coppola then hired him for an uncredited role as a helicopter pilot in 1979's Apocalypse Now.

On television,, Ermey had voice roles on The Simpsons (as Colonel Leslie Hapablap) and Family Guy.

Matthew Modine, his Full Metal Jacket co-star, actually quoted poet Dylan Thomas as he remembered Ermey on Twitter:

#SemperFidelis Always faithful. Always loyal. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And, in closing, even Donald Trump Jr. Tweeted a tribute upon learning of the actor's death:

Well today we lost a legend and a great American. I am proud to have had R. Lee Ermey as a friend and shooting teammate.

If you thought he was motivating in Full Metal Jacket you should have seen him on the firing line when points mattered.

I’ll never forget those moments just not sure I can relay them fully here... just take my word for it LEGENDARY!!! (I wish I filmed his reaction to me bringing a pink gun to shoot in a match see pic 2.

He was having none of my “it takes a real man to shoot a pink gun” line. I made it just for that response and he did not disappoint.) They unfortunately don’t make many like him these days.

Thanks for your friendship sir.

May R. Lee Ermey rest in peace.

Emma Stone Accused of White Feminism for Oscars Remark

Sunday night's Academy Awards were a hit, but they weren't without their controversies.

From Gary Oldman and Kobe Bryant's Oscar wins to Ryan Seacrest's presence on the red carpet, there was awkwardness for viewers and for stars.

One interesting moment came when Emma Stone made a political statement that didn't go over very well.

She's now being accused of "white feminism."

Emma Stone on the Red Carpet, Oscars 2018

Emma Stone won an Academy Award for La La Land, and this year she presented the category of Best Director.

To start things off, she spoke:

"It is the director whose indelible touch is reflected on every frame. It is the director who, shot by shot, scene by scene, day by day, works with every member of the crew to further the story."

She continued to praise the job that a director does.

"And it is the vision of the director that takes an ordinary movie and turns it into a work of art."

Then it came time to introduce the nominees.

"These four men and Greta Gerwig created their own masterpieces this year."

Emma Stone Announces the Winner

Clearly, Emma Stone was trying to emphasize the fact that, with many skilled directors, the Academy somehow decided that 80% of the ones good enough to be nominees were men.

And perhaps she was trying to recreate Natalie Portman's "all-male nominees" jab from the Golden Globes.

However, on a night when Jordan Peele was nominated for Get Out and Guillermo Del Toro was nominated for The Shape of Water, Emma Stone's focus exclusively on gender did not go over well with some viewers.

And people shared their gripes on Twitter:

"Peak white feminism from Emma Stone. Pointing out that 4 of the nominees are men while ignoring that 2 of those men are minorities."

"She minimized the incredible achievements of a Black man and a Mexican immigrant in the name of white feminism."

"Ok emma stone being like 'four male directors and greta gerwig' or whatever tf she said is exactly what we mean by white feminism. Jordan Peele and Guillermo Del Toro are not white men that had everything easily handed to them and they don’t deserve to be classified as such."

Emma Stone Smiles as Oscars Presenter

To be clear, what "white feminism" means is practicing a sort of feminism that focuses only on one's own experiences, which means that activism is less helpful or even harmful to other individuals.

For example, someone whose push for feminism forgets about people of color, or the LGBT community, or the disabled, because that's not part of their experience.

Not all white people who are feminists are white feminists and not all white feminists are white, though the term arose from white activists who ignored the experiences of black and brown women.

(This phenomenon exists in any human rights movement -- men might push for racial equality from an exclusively male perspective; some advocates for LGBT rights might forget that there are LGBT people of color who experience the world differently)

Emma Stone seems like an especially likely target for this kind of critique, because she starred in La La Land which famously whitewashed the story of jazz.

She, a white woman, also played a Hawaiian woman in Aloha for reasons that the world still does not quite understand.

Guillermo Del Toro Wins, Awarded by Emma Stone

Emma Stone was thinking along lines of gender but forgetting that Jordan Peele and Guillermo Del Toro are men of color who also face numerous obstacles.

Considering that some Oscar voters outright refused to watch Get Out because they didn't consider it to be a worthy film speaks volumes about how far Hollywood needs to go.

(Though Oscars voters are famously awful -- whenever the notes made on their votes comes out anonymously, the world is reminded that there are a lot of terrible people making these decisions)

Whether or not Emma Stone is a white feminist or was just using her very limited time to address one of many problems is ... unclear.

But it's not a cruel accusation. Emma Watson has recently spoken about how being called that years ago helped to open her eyes to becoming a better intersectional feminist.

Guillermo Del Toro, Roger Durling, Jordan Peele

Fortunately, Best Director went to Guillermo Del Toro, a Mexican director, whose film about about a woman who bangs a fish man is sometimes affectionately referred to as "Grinding Nemo."

He also won Best Picture.

And Jordan Peele then won Best Original Screenplay for Get Out.

It would be nice to see more women win, but it's also nice to see men of color make historic wins. There are too few of each, and not for lack of talent or merit.
