The Barbenheimer numbers are in!
Barbie and Oppenheimer both won big at the box office in their respective opening weekends, surpassing projections for both projects.
The Greta Gerwig-directed Barbie far exceeded expectations with $155 million, making it the biggest debut of the year.
Christopher Nolan‘s Oppenheimer also excelled, bringing in $80.5 million in its opening weekend.
The two movies had the biggest collective box office weekend of the pandemic era, as well as the fourth-biggest overall weekend in history, according to Variety.
Barbie was budgeted for $145 million, and got an “A” CinemaScore and 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s also the biggest debut ever for a film directed by a woman!
Analysts were anticipating a $50 million start for Oppenheimer, which added $93.7 million for a global tally of $174 million. The movie cost $100 million to make.
