Megyn Kelly Gets Roasted by NBC Colleagues for Racist Comments

Megyn Kelly just reminded the world that she doesn’t know how to google the answers to simple questions. Instead, she asks them on live television.

After a massive backlash, Megyn is super sorry about defending blackface and seems to actually understand the topic.

But despite her apology, it looks like she’s still not off the hook — even with her own colleagues at NBC.

Today panel discusses megyn kelly

News anchors are supposed to report and discuss the news. In general, they really should not be making the news.

But that’s what Megyn did, in the worst way, when she defended blackface Halloween costumes in a discussion with an all-white panel.

She has apologized and explained how the backlash opened her eyes, and NBC’s Today had a group of her own collegues discuss the controersy.

Morgan Radford participated in the discussion along with Al Roker, Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb, and Craig Melvin.

Al Roker says that her internal email is not a sufficient way of saying that she’s sorry.

“The fact is,” Roker says. “While she apologized to the staff, she owes a bigger apology to folks of color around the country.”

Al roker discusses megyn kelly blackface remarks

Roker explains how, as a black man, this is very personal to him.

“This is history going back to the 1830s minstrel shows to demean and to denigrate a race,” Roker says. “It was not right.”

“I am old enough to have lived through Amos ‘n’ Andy, where you had people in blackface playing two black characters, magnifying the worst stereotypes about black men.”

He refers to nightmarish caricatures of black men, performed by white men, that were used as weapons to ridicule real black people.

“And that,” he explains. “Is what the problem is. That is what the issue is.”

Craig melvin discusses megyn kelly apology

Craig Melvin doesn’t mince words when he talks about Megyn’s segment.

He calls her defense of blackface both “stupid” and “indenfensible.”

There are people in this world who might understandably not realize the historical implications of blackface.

A millionaire television anchor who can and should read up on any controversial topics that she plans to address on television has no such excuse.

Melvin also points out the fact that Jim Crow laws are named for a blackface minstrel character, a fact we mentioned recently when discussing whiteface.

Megyn kelly pro blackface

Despite reports of an alleged feud, Savannah Guthrie clearly felt uneasy about throwing a colleague under the bus.

“It is uncomfortable, obviously,” Guthrie says. “Because Megyn is a colleague at NBC News.”

But it is that working relationship that made it so vital for NBC to have a panel discuss Megyn’s controversial remarks.

For the public, it’s about education and illumination of an important topic.

For NBC, and we don’t mean to sound cynical, it’s about making it clear that the organization as a whole does not defend blackface.

Morgan radford speaks on megyn kelly

Roker and Melvin both made excellent points, which you can see and hear in the video that we’ve attached.

But it was Morgan Radford who arguably put the best spin on this situation.

She acknowledged the historical weight of blackface while also presenting Megyn’s words as a “learning moment.”

Megyn, Radford says, “really gifted us the opportunity to have this conversation and a public discourse.”

“We now have the courage and we have the platform to have conversations like this,” Radford notes.

She says that these talks are important “even when they’re uncomfortable because we can see they’re still necessary.”

Megyn kelly comments about santa revisited

It probably does not help that Megyn Kelly has a history of making wildly controversial remarks about race.

She made these comments primarily while working at Fox News, where white nationalists like Tucker Carlson thrive.

Megyn may be best known for having claimed that Santa Claus, a fictional character based upon a Turkish man, is white. As if she had met him.

She also claimed that Jesus, a Middle Eastern Jewish man, was a white man.

Her suggestion that blackface was acceptable when she was growing up — in the 1970s — dredged all of that back up.

Megyn kelly as today anchor

But, as we said, Megyn did apologize, first in an email to colleagues and then to her viewers.

“The history of blackface in our culture is abhorrent; the wounds too deep,” Megyn acknowledges.

“I’ve never been a ‘pc’ kind of person,” she says. “But I understand that we do need to be more sensitive in this day and age.”

In general, labels like politically correct are useless, and hurled around by people who want to dismiss any struggles that are not their own.

It appears that Megyn is learning a little more about the world.

We wish that she, as the highest paid television anchor on the planet despite her ratings, would actively educate herself before getting backlash.

Al Roker: I Would Whomp Spencer Pratt

Heidi Montag may have already forgiven Al Roker for “attacking” her, but the war of words between the Today show weatherman and Speidi is not dead yet.

Yesterday, Roker said on Today that if Spencer Pratt had gotten physical during their contentious interview, he would have “dumped him like a bag of dirt.”

Roker was addressing a comment Spencer made to TMZ in which the reality star claimed he would have “ripped his head off” during Monday’s interview.

Would have, had he not been “saved by Jesus” a few weeks back, that is.

Man. Non-stop trash talk to celebrity gossip sites are one thing (and a good thing), but how much would you pay to see these two physically duke it out?

Also yesterday, Al Roker defended his allegedly harsh questioning of the gruesome twosome during the original interview, which sparked the Speidi feud.

“I believe I asked what a lot of people wanted to know,” said Roker, who was in disbelief that Heidi Montag advised women to “be careful around him.”

“C’mon. I’ve interviewed hundreds of women on this program, never had a complaint. [Heidi and Spencer] are so unused to people actually asking them a real question that they didn’t know how to handle it,” said the miffed Roker.

“There are a lot of celebrities who come on – real celebrities – who’ve actually done something and act civil.”

Al Roker Interview

Speidi Declares End to Al Roker Feud

Heidi and Spencer Pratt thought Today co-host Al Roker went too far Monday when asking if they were proud of her behavior on I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here.

Their visit sparked a war of words and a full-on Speidi-Al Roker feud.

“This weather guy was definitely out of line. He should stick to predicting cloudy days,” Heidi hilariously said. “Maybe someone rained on his little parade today.”

Heidi Montag complained that Roker didn’t thank them after the interview and made her cry after attacking her on national TV, saying he should learn manners.

“Please do not be rude to women in the future,” she chastised Al. “Please do not be rude to me. Please watch your tone, especially if you have a mother or a wife or a daughter. I don’t think that they would appreciate you talking to them like that.”

Fortunately for Al Roker, the gruesome twosome is ready to bury the hatchet.

“I forgive you, you don’t even have to ask,” Heidi said. “It’s OK. The devil gets into all of us sometimes. You’re forgiven. It’ll be a sunny day tomorrow, Weatherman!”

For his part, Roker sort of apologized via Twitter last night.

“Heidi and Spencer Pratt are young and eventually will realize there is more to life than fame,” he write. “And by putting them on, we are playing into their evil plot for world domination. For that, I apologize. Mwuh ha ha ha ha.”

When Spencer learned of Roker’s apology, he said he was satisfied.

“At least he understands Speidi’s goals now,” he said.

Heidi and Spencer Speak on Al Roker Feud

Celebrity Feud of the Day: Al Roker vs. Speidi!

Spencer and Heidi Pratt made an unlikely new enemy in Al Roker, who had the misfortune of interviewing the gruesome twosome on Monday’s Today show.

The Hills stars were grilled on their recent stint on NBC’s I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here, which they left for good after an extremely tumultuous week.

The once-portly weatherman couldn’t hide his disdain.

After Heidi danced around a question of whether she was proud of her conduct on the show, Roker cut her off sternly: “No [the question is], are you proud of this?”

Al also told “villain” Spencer that most people think he’s more like a “jerk.”

After the interview, Roker continued to go off on Speidi via Twitter.

“Heidi and Spencer are an interesting couple. famous for… being infamous,” he wrote. “Bad and vacuous behavior. I think we’re at minute 11 of their 15.”

Always one to make sure he gets the last word, Spencer Pratt hit back on Ryan Seacrest’s KIIS-FM radio show this morning with this hilarious response:

“Was the weatherman asking questions? I thought we were getting interviewed by Matt Lauer. We were thrown off that the weatherman was even trying to talk to Speidi.”

His wife also had some choice remarks.

Heidi Montag complained that Roker didn’t even thank them afterward.

“I was shocked at how rude he was,” she said. “I was crying because I felt personally attacked because he was yelling and saying, ‘Do you feel proud of this?'”

The future Playboy model added, “I felt like saying, ‘Do you feel proud of what you’re saying [to us]?’ I’m a young woman and you’re coming at me so mean-spirited.”

“He just made it uncomfortable and an awful experience.”

“I wouldn’t be interviewed by him again. I’d advise women to be careful around him because I feel like he definitely attacked me and I didn’t deserve that at all.”

Not overdramatic at all. Maybe Al and David Letterman can commiserate over drinks sometime. Here’s the video of Roker’s interview with Speidi …
