Christian School Allegedly Expels Teen Over A ‘Gay’ Rainbow Shirt & Birthday Cake

Homophobes’ war on cake is getting more ludicrous by the day.

According to The Courier Journal, a Christian school in Louisville, Kentucky expelled a student last week after school officials allegedly discovered the teen had celebrated her birthday with a rainbow-themed cake. Yes, seriously.

Kimberly Alford told the news outlet that her 15-year-old daughter (above) was a freshman at Whitefield Academy, a private school serving students in preschool through 12th grade, until January 6, when she received an email explaining her daughter was being kicked out “immediately due to a post on social media.”

The post in question apparently featured a photo that Alford posted to her Facebook page in late December showing her daughter celebrating her birthday at a Texas Roadhouse restaurant.  In the pic, the teen was wearing a sweater featuring a (gasp!) rainbow design and, even more blasphemously, sitting in front of a colorful, rainbow-themed cake.

Alford said a concerned school affiliate shared the Facebook photo with Whitefield Academy officials. In response, Head of School Bruce Jacobson told the mother that the image of her daughter celebrating her birthday “demonstrates a posture of morality and cultural acceptance contrary to that of Whitefield Academy’s beliefs,” and follows two years of “lifestyle violations.”

As many of our readers will know, the rainbow flag is used as a symbol of LGBTQ+ pride. But Alford said her daughter isn’t even gay: the cake, according to her, was literally just a fun dessert designed with “assorted colors.”

She added:

“I just feel like it’s a label (school officials) have put on her. Just because I’m wearing a rainbow doesn’t mean I’m gay.”

The mother said her daughter wears “tomboy-type clothing” occasionally and has always been athletic, but said the photo of her with the rainbow cake and shirt “meant nothing,” insisting:

“She did nothing wrong.”

Whitefield’s Head of School begs to differ, however. Jacobson told The Courier Journal the expulsion came after “two years of continuous violations of our student code of conduct.” While he wouldn’t say whether the rainbow cake photo played a role in their decision, he noted the girl had faced “a progression of discipline,” adding:

“All the families of students know that they have expectations they need to (follow). We always try to work with families over a period of time.”

Alford admitted she and her daughter met with officials last October after a school disciplinary officer found Juul pods in the teen’s backpack. After the meeting, everyone agreed that the girl “would be on probation,” she said, continuing:

“Any other behavior issues could cause her to be expelled. Since October, there have been no disciplinary issues. There have been no academic issues. There has been nothing.”

Except for that sinful cake photo, of course.

Whitefield Academy’s parent/student handbook does state that high school students may face expulsion “when there is a serious departure from the school’s guidelines” for student conduct, which, according to a section on student behavior, is expected “to be Christ-like.”

The handbook continues:

“On occasion, the atmosphere or conduct within a particular home may be counter or in opposition to the biblical lifestyle the school teaches. This includes, but is not limited to, sexual immorality, homosexual orientation or the inability to support Biblical standards of right and wrong… In such cases, the school reserves the right, within its sole discretion, to refuse admission of an applicant or to discontinue enrollment of a student.”

Alford said Jacobson told her the cake and sweater “just kind of represents gay pride” and that she “should have refused the cake.” So while officials didn’t say it outright, it really sounds like the rainbow cake was the reason the teen was expelled.

As for her daughter, Alford said the girl is now attending a public school and moving on from the academy she had attended since sixth grade. Thankfully, she revealed that support from her friends at Whitefield and some in the school community has been “overwhelming.” She shared:

“She’s adjusting really well, but she also seems stressed and overwhelmed at times. I felt like (Whitefield Academy) had a positive impact on her, but I just feel like those religious beliefs they are imposing now are very judgmental. That’s not what I wanted for her.”

We think getting expelled from that place was the healthiest thing that could’ve happened to her.
