Demi Moore’s breakup with Ashton Kutcher apparently messed her up worse than you thought!
The 56-year-old actress opens up about navigating through love, loss, and aging in Hollywood with her new memoir Inside Out, in which she writes about how divorce from The Ranch star put her on an emotional roller coaster for years.
An industry source said to People of the stars’ split:
“It really played havoc with her self confidence. Demi was confused about her life and what direction her career would take as she got older.”
It’s a tale as old as Faye Dunaway: a once prolific actress reaches a certain age and discovers there suddenly aren’t many roles for her to play anymore.
But Moore was dealing with this around the same time her relationship with the significantly younger Kutcher — whom she was married to from 2005-2013 — started to deteriorate.
As we reported, the Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle actress claims she miscarried early in their relationship, and blamed herself. To cope, she reportedly started abusing Vicodin and alcohol.
Demi’s mental health only got worse when she and Ashton separated in 2011 amid reports the Iowa native had cheated on her. The source added:
“Separating from Ashton was just a nightmare for her. It took her years to get over it. She was always very insecure about their age difference and it was devastating that Ashton left her. She had so much self-blame and resentment towards herself after the split. She was really struggling mentally and didn’t take care of herself.”
Aw. Breakups can be tough!
Thankfully, the Ghost star is getting to a much healthier place. The insider explained:
“She really has changed a lot for the better in the past few years. You can tell that she is much happier and enjoys her life more. She goes to therapy and works on being a positive and kind person to herself.”
Writing her book helped, too. The source noted:
“She wanted to free herself of the trauma and heartbreak endured after her split from Ashton, but it was a struggle. Demi has been trying to improve her life, gain self-esteem and get healthy for several years. Spilling it all out in a personal memoir is a way to close the old door and open new ones.”
We’re ready for the tea!
