Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright Fire Homophobic Pastor After Lisa Vanderpump Steps In

The fateful wedding between Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright is nearly upon us, and the controversy has been all over Twitter.

This goes beyond people's issues with Jax. It turns out that the Kentucky pastor Jax and Brittany chose has said a lot of hateful things.

As you can imagine, the backlash was intense -- and even Lisa Vanderpump got dragged into the mess.

Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright chose a bad pastor

Back in December of 2018, Jax and Brittany happily announced that they'd chosen the person to officiate their wedding.

The two plan to get married at The Kentucky Castle, in Versailles, Kentucky.

The man whom they selected was a local pastor by the name of Ryan Dotson. Brittany says that she's known him for years.

The problem is that Dotson has expressed some deeply hateful views towards the LGBTQ+ community.

Some of these public posts were made years ago. Others were made just months before Brittany and Jax selected Dotson.

Yikes.

Dotson's most recent bigoted posts had encouraged Christians to flee from churches that welcomed trans members or trans pastors.

Vanderpump Rules has a sizable LGBTQ+ following, and longtime viewers were appalled by what they saw in his old and recent posts.

"There are a lot of reasons to no longer watch #VanderpumpRules," one tweet begins.

"Like, idk, everyone pretending that Brittany marrying someone who verbally abused her is cool," the tweet continues.

"But," the criticism concludes. "I’d say the biggest reason is that this is Jax & Brittany’s pastor & @BravoTV is giving him a platform for the wedding."

Others took a softer tone when addressing the couple.

"@mrjaxtaylor @BNCartwright I don’t understand how you can have this pastor officiate your wedding," stated another tweet.

"Why give people like this a potentially bigger platform to spread messages of hate?!" the fan asked.

The fan implored them to "Make smarter and more socially conscious decisions."

"I will say that I’m a huge supporter and always will be of the LGBTQ community," Brittany assured fans at the time.

"And no matter what," she insisted. "I would never try to ever make anybody feel uncomfortable,

“I talked to him myself and he promised me that he was not that way," Brittany said. "That he was not saying anything about the community whatsoever."

"I’ve known this man for years," she added. "And if it was anything that I felt otherwise, I would never choose somebody like that."

We don't doubt that Brittany hadn't seen that side of him.

But ... maybe she could have scrolled through just those last few months of Facebook posts, you know?

An Icy Look

The outcry on social media drew the attention of Lisa Vanderpump, who was SUR to comment on the controversy.

"I’ve contacted Jax and Brittany," she told Buzzfeed. "Who are extremely disappointed as to the depth and seriousness of these comments by the minister."

"And," Lisa shared, the couple "are very shocked and feel that obviously major alterations will have to be made in their ceremonial plans."

"They are dealing with this today," Lisa insisted. "This attitude is totally not acceptable to them and changes are forthcoming."

One important part of wedding planning that nobody ever talks about: make sure that your nuptial plans don't embarrass your boss.

This controversy received a lot of attention over the past week or so, as June is LGBTQ+ Pride month.

It's not that people are suggesting that Dotson should be jailed or silenced -- merely not given a platform.

Brittany wants to assure fans of Vanderpump Rules as well as civil rights advocates

"We already took care of this," Brittany tweeted on Wednesday. "So I would appreciate it if people would quit trying to spread rumors.""

Brittany doesn't like people acting "like we don’t care and aren’t supporters when you guys have no clue how we feel."

"Or the fact that we have already changed, she continued. “I’m focused on marrying the man I love. Nothing else."

Jax also tweeted on the subject.

"He’s always been kind to me, I didn’t know his past that well, I was taught be nice to others, regardless, Jax explained to a fan.

“I don’t agree with his thinking," he affirmed. "But that doesn’t mean I need to attack the man. Be kind to everyone,"

"isn’t that what we are fighting for. We are human," Jax wrote. "Remember that."

Jax also made a statement dangerously close to I'm not bigoted, I have gay friends, but we don't think that he meant it that way.

"I pretty much invited every gay person I knew, except billy," Jax shared.

He is referring, of course, to Billie Lee.

"You can be mad at me all you want for that one," Jax added. "I don’t care."

Obviously, the issue isn't about who's invited to the wedding, but about which bigots are given a national spotlight that could help them spread hate.

Fortunately, that has been resolved.
