Updated Oscar Predictions For Early October

Believe it or not, nearly every single Academy Award hopeful has screened by now. Think about it for a second. Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman screened two weeks ago at the New York Film Festival. That left only Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, Todd Haynes’ Dark Waters, Tom Hooper’s Cats, Sam Mendes’ 1917, Jay Roach’s Bombshell, plus now the news that Clint Eastwood will see Richard Jewell hit theaters this year. Not all of those will even come close to contention in 2019. So, we more or less know the state of the race. As such, today is a perfect time for some updated Oscar predictions. This time around, we can factor in the aforementioned Eastwood joining the race with Richard Jewell, the potential impact of Joaquin Phoenix and Joker, as well as more concrete information about 1917. Factoring in that, along with having seen Marriage Story last week at NYFF (as well as Jojo Rabbit as you’re reading this), things are coming into focus. Now, nothing will be set in stone until the precursors begin and we get a sense of who and what are being cited, but there’s a sense that we’re just waiting for that now.
