Hugh Grant has at least one person in his corner amid the backlash over his awkward AF interview with Ashley Graham!
For those who don’t know, the Notting Hill star had a cringe-worthy interview with the 35-year-old model during ABC’s Oscars pre-show on Sunday. Hugh gave a few curt responses to her questions, basically giving her very little to work with, and then he rolled his eyes at Ashley when their conversation was done!
Although many people thought the 62-year-old actor was being rude towards Ashley, his longtime friend and former Music and Lyrics co-star Drew Barrymore saw it as Hugh being his classic “grumpy” self. While talking about how Hugh said “her singing is just horrendous” in a video interview for WIRED’s Autocomplete Interview, the 48-year-old actress came to his defense over his red carpet interview. She said on Friday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show:
“If you know Hugh, that is his way of loving you. It’s funny too because there’s this thing going around with like him and Ashley Graham on the red carpet and people are like ‘Oh he’s such a curmudgeon and she’s so thrown,’ and I’m like ‘No, that is Hugh Grant.’”

The Never Been Kissed star continued:
“You think you’re getting this charming movie star and what you really get is grumpy Hugh. And then you fall in love with grumpy Hugh. When he says that, I’m telling you, he is being absolutely funny. He doesn’t mean one negative thing about it. The person that Ashley Graham met on that carpet is the real Hugh.”
Yeah… We don’t know if that is a good thing. Drew then noted that it even took her a “second” to get used to Hugh’s personality and behavior before growing to “love” him:
“Probably like Ashley Graham on the carpet, like, ‘who am I dealing with?’ And then I was like, oh, no, I love you. I want to love you. You’re not letting me love you. As I got to know him, I was like I do love you. I love you for the real you. He is a hilarious, good human being.”
While he could be a “good human being,” that doesn’t mean he wasn’t acting very rude and impolite towards Ashley. Just saying! But the momma of three doesn’t seem to be letting his poor attitude bother her right now! You can ch-ch-check out her entire discussion on the Hugh and Ashley situation (below):

As for her response to Hugh calling her singing “horrendous?” Drew also shared a hilarious video on Instagram of herself with a hairbrush in hand as she sings Way Back to Love – the song their characters write in Music and Lyrics. Watch it (below):
