Cobie Smulders is opening up about Maria Hill’s fate following the first episode of Marvel’s Secret Invasion.
The 41-year-old actress spoke to Vanity Fair after the series premiere on Disney+, teasing if her longtime character was done for good or could be back in any capacity (just like Nick Fury and Agent Coulson).

If you watched, you know that Cobie‘s Maria was shot by her husband, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), who turned out to be shapeshifter Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir) instead.
The real Nick rushed to her side, only to see her seemingly pass away…but did she really?
“To have Fury … know that Hill thinks that Fury shot her — that’s the pain of that moment,” Cobie says, adding that she likes to “think that she, by the time she passed, knew it wasn’t him. Initially, it’s terrifying and so confusing. But I’d like to think she got there.”
Cobie then added that Maria’s death feels like the real deal.
“It felt and it feels strange. Maria Hill’s passing is very real, and it’s shocking, and it feels very human…. It was a sad day,” she shared.
Cobie has played Maria since 2011 in her feature film debut in The Avengers, and has since portrayed the character in countless other Marvel projects.
That being said, she’s still open to returning, saying that no one is really “gone” from the MCU.
“There is a multiverse now, so anything is possible,” she says. “But I’m pretty sure this is it.”
Marvel’s Secret Invasion season one will continue airing on Wednesdays on Disney+.
