Taylor Swift Performs 'Dear John,' Believed to be About John Mayer, for First Time in Years, Comments on Re-Releasing the Song in 2023

Taylor Swift is looking back at one of her most iconic breakup songs – “Dear John.”

The 33-year-old “Shake It Off” pop titan included the track, which many believe is inspired by ex John Mayer, on her 2010 album Speak Now. Of course, she’s gearing up to release Taylor’s Version of the album within the next few weeks.

Considering that, it might be less surprising that Taylor brought the song out of retirement to play at her Eras Tour concert on Saturday (June 24) in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

While introducing it, she addressed the impending re-release and made a request of her Swifties.

Speaking to her fans, Taylor opened up about her plans to revisit “Dear John.” More specifically, she revealed one thing that she did not want to see happen when it came out.

“I’m 33 years old. I don’t care about anything that happened to me when I was 19 except the songs I wrote and the memories we made together,” she said. “So what I’m trying to tell you is that I’m not putting this album out so that you can go and feel the need to defend me on the internet against someone you think I might have written a song about.”

John has previously revealed that he has received hateful messages from the hitmaker’s fans on social media.

A video of her introduction to the song went viral on Twitter. Meanwhile, USA Today noted that Taylor hasn’t performed “Dear John” since 2012.

Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) will arrive on July 7.

If you missed it, another of Taylor‘s exes who fans believe inspired a song on Speak Now recently revealed how they felt about the project being revisited.
