In a statement, the Destin Beach Safety official Facebook released a statement explaining what happened leading up to the drowning.
At approximately 2:12 local time on June 27, a swimmer was in distress and a beach attendant called 911. Apparently there were 6 individuals that needed help, but when assistance arrived, they were told one of the individuals had failed to resurface. That individual was later identified as Ryan.
In response to there being riptides or ripcurrents in the area, the Destin Beach Safety official Facebook responded, saying, “Despite widespread media misinformation, yellow beach safety flags were flying at the time and there were no indications of any ‘riptides.’”
In another statement, they said “Mallett began struggling while attempting to swim to a second sandbar about 150 feet offshore of the beach.”
Our continued thoughts are with Ryan’s friends, family, and loved ones during this time. RIP.
