Salma Hayek Pinault is looking back on her very first red carpet event.

In a feature for W magazine, the 56-year-old actress recalled donning a a Hugo Boss men’s suit for the premiere of The Birdcage in 1996, and opened up about why she chose to wear the suit instead of a glamorous dress.

Turns out, no one would dress her.

“I didn’t have any connections,” Salma told the outlet, adding that the only one was “I had was to somebody I knew at Hugo Boss, so I wore a man’s suit because no one else gave me anything to wear.”

In addition to that, Salma also opened up about how it was difficult to dress her at that time.

“I’m Mexican. I’m also very short, which doesn’t help with the weight and doesn’t help with the design,” she shared. “But you know, I was ingenious. I took chances. I met someone at Hugo Boss, who was the only connection I had, so I wore man suits for a while.”

Most recently, Salma has been seen on the red carpet in many designers, with her favorite being Gucci.

Eva Longoria also looked back at one of her first ever red carpets, admitting she only paid $50 for a gown for a very prestigious event.
