'Barbie' Surpasses 'Mario' As Highest Grossing Movie of 2023 in North America

Barbie just hit a huge milestone!

On Thursday (August 24), Variety reported that Greta Gerwig‘s film had become the highest grossing movie of the year in North America, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Barbie earned $575.4 million at the domestic box office, allowing it to overtake Mario‘s $574 million domestic gross. Barbie has also grossed $1.3 billion globally, which means that it’s expected to surpass Mario‘s $1.35 billion worldwide gross as well.

Barbie also has the distinction of making the best debut of the year back in July with $162 million. It also scored the biggest opening weekend for a film directed by a woman, as well as the highest-grossing movie directed solely by a woman.

Barbie is currently the 14th-biggest domestic release and the 20th biggest global release of all time.
