Barbie is no longer holding the box office crown.
Over the weekend that included National Cinema Day on Sunday (August 27), director Neill Blomkamp‘s Gran Turismo topped Greta Gerwig‘s Barbie at the North American box office, totaling $17.4 million ahead of Barbie‘s $15.1 million.
While Gran Turismo was originally set for release on August 11, Sony opted for two weeks of preview screenings and fan events due to the absence of press events to promote the film in the midst of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Barbie reigned supreme at the box office for four consecutive weekends following its release on July 21 before it was beaten by Blue Beetle the weekend of August 18-20.
