Disney+ Is Cracking Down on Password Sharing Soon

Disney+ is making some big changes.

The streamer has notified subscribers in Canada that as of November 1, “Unless otherwise permitted by your service tier, you may not share your subscription outside of your household,” via Variety.

The notification also alerts customers that if the company has determined that a Disney+ subscriber has violated those terms, “we may limit or terminate access to the service and/or take any other steps as permitted by this agreement.”

It also suggests that Disney+ will be offering a new option (and/or options) for account-sharing outside a primary user’s household, via Variety.

The notification to Canadian subscribers is part of the company’s updates to Disney+ subscriber agreements, and the U.S. update is said to be coming later this year.

Disney CEO Bob Iger previously announced that the company was developing a strategy to monetize streaming account password-sharers.

“We are actively exploring ways to address account sharing and the best options for paying subscribers to share their accounts with friends and family,” he said on an earnings call. “Later this year, we will begin to update our subscriber agreements with additional terms on our sharing policies, and we will roll out tactics to drive monetization sometime in 2024.”
