Alanis Morissette is facing the challenges in her life head-on — including tackling some very difficult topics of late.
The 46-year-old rocker and mom of three with husband Souleye went on Dax Shepard‘s Armchair Expert podcast this past week to talk about family. During the enlightening conversation, the You Oughta Know singer opened up about what life was like after going through multiple miscarriages in trying to achieve her family goals.

Though she and Souleye share three gorgeous children now — daughter Onyx, 3, and sons Ever, 9, and Winter, 10 months — things weren’t always so simple for the pop-rock 90s icon. She admitted as much to Dax, revealing she’d had “a bunch of miscarriages” in between her pregnancies, with things getting so bad at one point, she was skeptical she could continue on with that pattern.
Still, the Canadian-born singer managed to keep her eyes on the prize, so to speak, and get beyond the emotional and physical challenges that come with the miscarriage. Persistent as ever, she said:
“Not all of it was the ideal situation [with her children’s age gap]. I’m an optimist who will get depressed and cry, but at the end of the day, there’s still that little light, that little star of Bethlehem keeps dangling over there. We were chasing and just showing up and then surprises and then devastations and all of it. But, I mean, I do trust. I have this trust pilot light thing that keeps cooking along — even when there’s a torrential downpour, it’s still flickering — of hope and faith and vision for something to work out, whatever it is.”
And work out, it has, considering the You Learn singer has her three babies in tow. It may have taken longer tan expected, but as Morissette herself notes with that pilot light metaphor, things turned out to be right on time in the end!

This isn’t the first time the angsty girl-pop icon has revealed a behind-the-scenes look at her pregnancy journey, either. Just about a year ago, she got equally authentic on this topic with the folks over at Self, telling them:
“I felt so much grief and fear [over the miscarriages]. I chased and prayed for pregnancy and learned so much about my body and biochemistry and immunity and gynecology through the process. It was a torturous learning and loss-filled and persevering process. I had done tentacles of investigation on everything, from hormones to physicality, every rabbit hole one could go down to chase answers. I have different doctors who laugh at the thickness of my files. So, for me I’ve tried every different version from heavily self-medicating, to formal allopathic medications, to now.”
Wow! Sounds like she became quite the, um, armchair expert, wouldn’t you say? Seriously though, what do U make of Alanis’ difficult journey here, y’all?
We’re all going through something, and hers was particularly difficult… so glad she came out on the other end to find happiness and love from her family!!!
