Here’s an interesting bit of news that dropped today. As many of us speculate about what the Oscar ceremony this time around will look like, the Academy has opted to name its producers for the 2021 telecast. In an interesting turn, they’re going with a filmmaker who has experience working in various forms of media, tapping Steven Soderbergh. Soderbergh will produce alongside Jesse Collins and Stacey Sher, making it a three-pronged team this time around. Team are set to make the Oscars something very different this season, even more so than it already was going to be. Read on for more on the news… According to The Hollywood Reporter, Collins, Sher, and Soderbergh are a sign that we’re going to see the 93rd Academy Awards televised in one way or another. It’s a good bit of news, even if the Oscars do still end up virtual, in some manner. If nothing else, Soderbergh and company should bring a bit of welcome innovation to things, modernizing it all in some forms. We’ll see what happens in April, when the show goes down, but there’s another bit of intrigue regarding the ceremony. If nothing else, April 25th will an experimental show, to some degree, and that’s worth giving a shot to, especially this year. Here’s some of their story: In the surest sign yet that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is committed to mounting a televised 93rd Oscars ceremony — in one form or another, despite the raging pandemic — on April 25, the organization announced Tuesday that Steven Soderbergh, Stacey Sher and Jesse Collins have agreed to produce the telecast, which will air on ABC. Soderbergh, of course, is a veteran director who burst onto the scene with 1989’s Sex, Lies and Videotape and won a best director Oscar for 2000’s Traffic. Sher is a twice Oscar-nominated producer whose first nomination came for producing Soderbergh’s other 2000 film, Erin Brockovich, and second nom came for producing Quentin Tarantino’s 2012 pic Django Unchained. And Collins, meanwhile, has considerable experience producing televised awards shows — among them the 2019 Grammys, for which he received an Emmy nom.
