Yesterday saw the Hollywood Foreign Press Association chime in and really do their part to upend this already unusual awards season. The HFPA, which puts on the Golden Globe Awards each year, did a review of what studios had sent them, category and eligibility wise. The result was several contenders being shifted, as well as an additional one entering the fray. That one? Well, it’s none other than Hamilton. Suffice it to say, when the Globe nominations are announced on February 3rd, there will be some surprises. Will that translate into upset wins when the ceremony is held on the 28th of February? Well, that remains to be seen, of course. According to an exclusive in Variety, the annual review by the HFPA has led to some of the film submissions being switched from the categories that the studios initially intended. For example, Promising Young Woman was submitted as a comedy, but will compete as a drama. Despite going Supporting with Oscar, Maria Bakalova will be in the Best Actress (Comedy) category at the Golden Globes. There’s also the cast of One Night in Miami… not being separated, so they’ll all either be in Best Actor (Drama) most likely, or perhaps Best Supporting Actor. These are just some of the changes, so read on for more… Here’s some of their report: The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has completed its annual review of film submissions for the Golden Globe awards, and Variety has learned exclusively that many films and performances have been switched from the studios’ intended submissions. “Promising Young Woman” from Focus Features was switched from comedy to the drama categories. Written and directed by Emerald Fennell, the film that tells the story of a woman seeking revenge on those who wronged her was not accepted by the voting body. Starring Carey Mulligan, the film has received a considerable amount of awards buzz, even rumored to be a big hit with the HFPA themselves. Mulligan recently won best actress with LAFCA. Per the HFPA rules, after all the studios submit their entries in the numerous categories, which are split between drama, comedy, lead and supporting, an initial committee reviews the submissions. According to the official rules, members can then vote to accept the studio’s submission requiring a 2/3 vote to overturn.
