Actor Jonathan Majors was arrested in New York City after an alleged domestic violence altercation over the weekend.
According to a statement from the New York City Police Department obtained by People, the 33-year-old Creed III star was taken into custody on Saturday after officers received a 911 call made from an apartment near the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan at 11:14 a.m. When officers arrived at the scene, their “preliminary investigation determined” that Jonathan was “involved in a domestic dispute with a 30-year-old female,” who has since been identified as his girlfriend by TMZ.
The unnamed woman then told police that she had allegedly been “assaulted” and was hospitalized with “minor injuries to her head and neck.” Thankfully, she is in stable condition at this time. Meanwhile, Jonathan was arrested and booked on charges of strangulation, assault and harassment. Prosecutors later formally charged Jonathan with two misdemeanor counts of third-degree assault, second-degree aggravated harassment, second-degree harassment, and third-degree attempted assault, per ABC News.

As for what happened? Law enforcement sources later told TMZ that the victim alleged she and the Lovecraft Country alum got into an argument in a taxi on Friday night when she allegedly saw another woman texting him and she confronted him – trying to look at his phone. According to the woman, Jonathan became angry and allegedly grabbed her hand. Per a criminal complaint obtained by ABC News, Jonathan then hit “her about the face with an open hand, causing substantial pain and a laceration behind her ear.”
She then accused him of putting his hands around her neck, resulting in swelling, bruising, and substantial pain to her neck and hand. TMZ reported that the pair spent the night apart from each other, and the woman reported the crime to the police. However, a rep for Jonathan denied any wrongdoing by the Marvel star, telling People in a statement:
“He has done nothing wrong. We look forward to clearing his name and clearing this up.”
His attorney, Priya Chaudhry, also denied the assault allegations to ABC News, claiming there is evidence to prove his innocence. This includes video footage from the taxi where the alleged assault happened, witness testimony from the driver, others who saw the incident, and “most importantly, two written statements from the woman recanting these allegations.” The lawyer added:
“Jonathan Majors is completely innocent … We are quickly gathering and presenting evidence to the District Attorney with the expectation that all charges will be dropped imminently. The NYPD is required to make an arrest in these situations, and this is the only reason Mr. Majors was arrested. We expect these charges to be dropped soon.”
Per TMZ, Jonathan was released without bail following his arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court on Saturday night. He is expected back in court in May. What an awful situation…
