Bachelor Alum Krystal Nielson Recalls ‘Extremely Traumatic’ Birth Story — Says Her Uterus ‘EXPLODED’! OMG!

Krystal Nielson is opening up about her harrowing birth story.

Back in November, the Bachelor Nation star welcomed her second child, a baby boy named Rowan Vincent Bowles, with her husband, Miles Bowles. They are also parents to daughter Andara, whom they welcomed in 2021 after her divorce from Bachelor in Paradise alum Chris Randone.

Nearly three months later, Krystal is now sharing all the details about the birth of her son, and what she went through is so terrifying! You guys, her uterus freaking ruptured! She recalled her “traumatic” story on Tuesday’s episode of the Almost Famous podcast:

“I was dilating at 36 weeks. We thought he was going to come soon. He was going to come early, and he was going to come really quickly because the second time, they tend to drop really fast. Your body knows what to do.”

Krystal said she got medication to soften the cervix, and after 35 hours, her healthcare providers decided to use a Foley balloon to speed things further along. However, the balloon got stuck! OMG! One of the nurses tried to pull it out, but with no success:

“From that point, I just started bleeding a lot. Things just really started to go downhill, honestly, from that point because it got completely stuck, and I was almost screaming in pain. They couldn’t get it out.”

An obstetrician eventually had to come to deflate it, and her medical team gave her an epidural to break her water instead. Krystal was, understandably, on edge after the scary incident with the balloon. Her anxiety only increased as the nurses changed shifts amid her delivery, thinking her son would be born before anyone came in to check on her again. But she ended up pushing for another three-and-a-half hours, which was not smooth sailing. Nowhere close.

Krystal explained she had a midwife guiding her through the delivery and a doctor on standby if needed — and she did end up needing her! During labor, the television personality needed an oxygen mask since she was feeling “extremely woozy” all of a sudden and had the doc step in to check on her:

“She came in and checked me, and she goes, ‘He’s so low, but his positioning, he’s stuck.’”

The OB went into the pelvis to rotate Rowan’s position, and Krystal said she “kind of blacked out” by then. What the wellness guru does remember is that “when she pulled her hand out, blood gushed out,” and she was quickly wheeled into an operating room. It turns out her uterus ruptured at some point during the delivery:

“We don’t know if her trying to rotate him had caused my uterus to rupture or if it had ruptured before, because my energy was fading very fast and had been for a while.”

Krystal ultimately had to undergo a C-section, which she said was “extremely traumatic” and “the most horrific thing I’ve been through.” She explained she was “convulsing off of the table and shaking” when the doctors were “cutting and then pulling” her open:

“Because he was so low, someone had to go in through my vagina and push him higher because they couldn’t get him out. They had to cut into my left rectus abdominis horizontally because my abs were too tight to pull him through. From there, he was vacuumed — suctioned out of me through the C-section.”

Jeez. And it gets worse…

After Rowan was out, he had to be taken to another hospital with Miles, as they were unsure if he would “make it” since his placenta prematurely detached from her uterus! Oh no! Meanwhile, she had to undergo surgery to repair her uterus. With so much going on, worrying about not only her life but her newborn baby’s, Krystal turned to prayer:

“When I was going under, this whole time, I was just praying. I was like, ‘Please, God, save my uterus. Please, God, save my uterus.’ And my baby, of course. But once he was out, it was just like, ‘Please save this.’”

Unfortunately, it wasn’t an easy fix. The 38-year-old continued:

“The surgeon told me my uterus, how it had ruptured — it’s not just like a clean cut, like when they do an incision — she said it was roadkill, it had completely just exploded. They weren’t able to put it together and it wasn’t holding stitches.”

A specialist arrived within 10 minutes to help with the procedure, and they were able to save her uterus, which Krystal recognizes as “a miracle.” She really got lucky! Wow!

Even though the doctors managed to repair the damage, they still advised her not to get pregnant again due to her complications. Krystal, understandably, was disappointed as she wanted more children:

“That was really hard hearing that we won’t be able to get pregnant again because the plan was to get pregnant within a year of giving birth to Rowan. I had recently given away the baby girl clothes I had been holding on for this other little girl I’d been hoping would come into our lives. I just don’t know what God’s plan will be for us, if there will be a third — yes, no, I don’t know.”

For now, Krystal said she and Miles are focused on their family of four. She concluded:

“I’m just really surrendering to what that chapter is going to look like for us. I’ve been releasing all the baby stuff and just know I don’t want to hold onto that energy. I just want to keep it open, fluid and moving. We’ll see.”

What a horrifying situation! We’re so glad Krystal and Rowan are OK now!!
