Taxes have been the undoing of many a young celeb.
The more these stars make, the more they owe the government.
And if their parents worked the kind of jobs where their debt to the IRS was deducted from their paycheck every week, then it’s possible that no one prepared them for the fact that they’d be responsible for forking over a sizable chunk of their earnings to Uncle Sam.
Of course, Catelynn Lowell and Tyler Baltierra have been famous since high school, so they probably should have figured all of that out by now.
The first rumors of financial difficulties within the Baltierra household arose earlier this week, when Catelynn and Tyler asked fans for money.
Yes, to the surprise of her followers, Catelynn asked that fans donate cash to become sponsors for her eldest daughter Nova’s cheerleading team.
“So Nova is looking for sponsors you can literally pick ANY number on this page and pay the number! So if you pick number 20 then you would donate $20!” Lowell wrote.
Now, that might be a reasonable request coming from the desk jockey who works in the cubicle next to yours.
But between their two MTV salaries, Catelynn and Tyler pull in more than a million dollars a year.
So why are they asking fans to donate money for their daughter’s uniform, when they could easily foot the bill for the entire team’s equipment?
Well, the answer might be found in the couple’s current troubles with the IRS.
According to a new report from UK tabloid The Sun, Catelynn and Tyler were hit with a federal tax lien in 2019 or taxes owed for the previous year.
The outlet reports that the Baltierras still owe $321,789.06 to the federal government as of this week.
Just last year, the couple paid off a federal tax lien for $535,010.97 for the years of 2016 and 2017.
But clearly, they’re still well behind on their taxes, and it might be several years before they’re able to catch up.
And that’s not the only bad financial news for Tyler and Catelynn.
As you’ve likely heard by now, the casts of Teen Mom OG and Teen Mom 2 have been combined to create a new spinoff series entitled Teen Mom: The Next Chapter.
Tyler and Catelynn will be participating in the series, but the larger cast means they’ll likely appear in fewer episodes, which means a smaller salary.
Anyway, it comes as no surprise that fans were put off by Catelynn’s recent request for money.
“Um WTF Cate? Y’all should have plenty of money. Go sponsor another child. I’m honestly shook,” one commenter wrote.
“Exactly!!! They have more than enough money, it’s shameful that she is asking for donations,” another added.
“This is just embarrassing and so cringe,” a third chimed in.
Hopefully, Tyler and Catelynn will be able to get their financial drama sorted out soon!
