Chris Pine Finally Explains What REALLY Went Down With Harry Styles In ‘Spitgate’!

Finally! Spitgate explained!

The over-the-top drama of Don’t Worry Darling — the press tour, not the movie itself, who’s going to remember that? — culminated at the Venice Film Festival in September. Florence Pugh fulfilled her contract of walking the red carpet — then jetted off to go film Dune Part Two, completely avoiding having to share any face time with director Olivia Wilde after their rumored feud. So instead the spotlight turned to Harry Styles‘ odd interaction with Chris Pine.

As Harry sat down in the theater for the premiere of the film, Chris was already in between him and then-girlfriend Olivia for some reason. And then the One Direction star leaned over him and… well, that’s the big question, isn’t it? It looked like he spat on him! Or maybe did that middle school bully thing of pretending to spit on him?

After a fandom frenzy on social media both stars’ camps released denials, with Pine’s publicist calling the whole thing “a ridiculous story” and “a complete fabrication” — but offering no details about what was actually happening. But now the Dungeons & Dragons star himself is finally willing to talk about it. In an Esquire “Explain This” video, he said, once and for all:

“Harry did not spit on me. Harry’s a very, very kind guy.”

So what happened? Well, Chris says he had no idea there even was drama until hours later:

“I was trying to figure out — I was on the plane with my publicist… we were flying back from Venice, and I’m sleeping, having a great time on the plane. I love planes. She wakes me up in a state, and she said, ‘We have to craft a message about what happened in Venice.’ And I was like, ‘About what?’ ‘About Harry spitting on you.'”

Chris was understandably confused:

“I had no idea what happened. She showed me the thing. And it does look, indeed, like Harry’s spitting on me.”

Yes! We’re so glad he sees it! Even if he was there and knows it didn’t happen, it totally looks like it, right? However he reiterated:

“He didn’t spit on me.”

Harry actually said something which caused his co-star’s bemused reaction. Chris hadn’t thought much of it at the time, but he recalled later:

“I think what he said — he leaned down — and I think he said, ‘It’s just words, isn’t it?'”

This was, apparently an inside joke among the cast as they were answering questions throughout the press junket.

“Because we’re all jetlagged. We’re all trying to answer these questions, and sometimes when you’re doing these press things your brain goes befuddled, and you start speaking gibberish. And we had a joke: ‘It’s just words, man.'”

So it was just sharing an inside joke? Huh. Watch Chris watch the video himself again, followed by his explanation (below)!

As for the rest of the Don’t Worry Darling drama? The Wonder Woman alum spoke on that for the Esquire profile’s print version. He said simply:

“If there was drama, there was drama. I absolutely didn’t know about it, nor really would I have cared. If I feel badly, it’s because the vitriol that the movie got was absolutely out of proportion with what was onscreen.”

As far as he’s concerned, that same hyperbole applied to the viral reaction to the premiere footage:

“Venice was normal things getting swept up in a narrative that people wanted to make, compounded by the metastasizing that can happen in the Twittersphere. It was ridiculous.”

However, he kind of understood — as he too got a kick out of some of the responses to his faces as viewers pointed out he was in another world:

“All the memes I saw about my face in Venice made me f**king laugh. Sometimes the question’s not that interesting, and you just f**king zone out, and you’re looking at a ceiling because it’s really pretty.”

Ha! No drama anywhere for Chris! He only had kind things to say about everyone he worked with on DWD, even saying he loves Florence Pugh “to f**king death” and has since working with her on The Outlaw King years earlier.

Well, that’s good to hear! What do YOU think of Pine’s explanation for all the Spitgate drama??
