Of all the ridiculous rules Jim Bob Duggar’s kids are forced to follow, the Duggar dress code might be the most absurd.
If you’ve been following the Duggars for any length of time, then you’re probably already familiar with the basics of the dress code.
They used to boast about it on their reality shows, and it’s still a part of their daily lives now that they’ve been forever banished from television.
Basically, Duggar women aren’t permitted to show any skin that’s not on their hands, neck, or face.
They’re discouraged from wearing anything that might stir up sinful feelings in the menfolk, who would apparently be driven mad at the sight of a bare ankle.
We’re exaggerating somewhat, but the Duggars really do place a ton of emphasis on “modest” dress.
And it’s not just women who have the misfortune to be born into the family who are forced to follow these rules.
Women who marry into the Duggar clan are also pressured to follow the rules.
One of the most recent converts to the cult of Duggar is Justin’s wife Claire Spivey.
Justin and Claire got married in February of 2021, shortly after he turned 18.
Unlike previous Duggar couples, Justin and Claire did not put down roots in northwest Arkansas near the rest of the clan.
Instead, the newlyweds settled down near Claire’s family in Amarillo, Texas.
This could mean that they enjoy slightly greater freedom than most of Justin’s siblings and in-laws.
Appropriately, Justin and Claire celebrated their freedom on the Fourth of July with a dip in the pool at what may or may not be her parents’ house.
(Their distance from Tontitown also allows the couple greater privacy, so not much is known about their lives.)
Anyway, Duggar swimwear is notoriously conservative and the women in the family are basically forced to suit up like they’re the strongman in a traveling circus from the 1890s.
Fans speculate that Claire was rocking the type of swimsuit that a normal human being would wear as she enjoyed her Independence Day.
They note that it looks as though she may have quickly covered up with a towel before Justin snapped a pic.
Now, Claire’s suit might have bared little more than her arms, legs, and shoulders, but that still would’ve made it more revealing than the usual Duggar swimwear.
The Spiveys are an evangelical Christian family — otherwise Jim Bob wouldn’t have approved the marriage.
But it’s possible that they’re more modern in their beliefs than the archaic Duggars, who still believe that a woman’s place is in the kitchen.
And not only should she be cooking, she should be pregnant, and sufficiently covered up.
Of course, now that he and Claire are married, it’s Justin who gets to decide how Claire is allowed to dress.
Maybe he’s a more modern evangelical, like Jeremy Vuolo, who gave Jinger Duggar permission to wear pants shortly after they got hitched.
Whatever the case, Justin and Claire seem to be enjoying married life — and that may or may not have something to do with their distance from his overbearing parents!
