Elon Musk Lists 'Cis' & 'Cisgender' as 'Slurs' on Twitter, Prompts Response From J.K. Rowling

Elon Musk has decided that the terms “cis” and “cisgender” are “considered slurs” on Twitter.

If you’re unfamiliar with the terms, the Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines “cisgender” as describing “someone whose internal sense of gender corresponds with the sex the person was identified as having at birth.”

However, Elon warned that the use of the word on his social media platform could carry a heavy risk. His tweet on the topic also prompted a response from Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling.

On Wednesday (June 21), Elon responded to a tweet where someone claimed that they were called “cis” despite saying that they “reject the word.”

“Repeated, targeted harassment against any account will cause the harassing accounts to receive, at minimum, temporary suspensions,” he wrote. “The words ‘cis’ or ‘cisgender’ are considered slurs on this platform.”

As users took to Twitter to complain about the terms being described as “slurs,” J.K. voiced her agreement with Elon‘s decision.

“‘Cis’ is ideological language, signifying belief in the unfalsifiable concept of gender identity. You have a perfect right to believe in unprovable essences that may or may not match the sexed body, but the rest of us have a right to disagree, and to refuse to adopt your jargon,” she tweeted, leading the Twitter owner to reply with “exactly.”

If you were unaware, J.K. has made controversial comments about the trans community, leading her to issue a response to the ensuing backlash earlier this year.
