It’s that time of year again — the nominees for TV’s biggest night were announced this morning in a ceremony hosted by Melissa Fumero and JB Smoove
Or perhaps we should call it streaming’s biggest night, since about half of this year’s top nominees are not available on cable.
And only one of the top shows — NBC’s Abbott Elementary — is a network series!
That’s a set of circumstances that would’ve been unimaginable just a few short years ago, but industry insiders and audiences alike have grown accustomed to the growing dominance of streamers and premium cable.
HBO was the day’s big winner with two of its shows — Succession and The White Lotus tying AppleTV’s perennial favorite Ted Lasso for the most nominations.
The beloved Netflix drama Squid Game also came up big with 14 nominations.
The South Korean series also enjoys the distinction of being the first foreign language show to be nominated for best drama.
As for the snubs, Yellowstone and its spinoff 1883 both went nom-less, as did Selena Gomez and Sadie Sink for their roles in Only Murders In the Building and Stranger Things, respectively.
Both actresses received wide acclaim for their performances, and we’re sure they have many awards and accolades ahead of them.
Hell, their futures are brighter than those of all the major networks combined!
