Even Indie Films Like “The Father” Are Still Shuffling Release Dates

Usually, when a film sees its release date bumped from 2020 and into 2021, we’re talking about a blockbuster. At the very least, it seems to almost always be a movie designed to make a bunch of money. The ones hoping to contend for awards, and especially the ones who already seem poised to score nominations at minimum from the Academy Awards, haven’t changed their dates too much. Well, today we have news on a few independent flicks that are opting to take this route, including one in The Father that seems like a fairly big contender for multiple Oscar citations. Read on for more… According to Variety, not only is Sony Pictures moving The Father, they’re also adjusting dates for I Carry You With Me and The Truffle Hunters. The Father is going from December 18th to February 26th. I Carry You With Me no longer has a date (it was initially meant to hit on January 8th), while The Truffle Hunters is bumping from December 25th to March 12th. Each of the films will still get an Oscar qualifying run in December, so that’s good news for the two that were moving out of the Academy’s extended window. As for The Father, it just makes the cut, but also has festival buzz and the perception that Anthony Hopkins in Best Actor, Olivia Colman in Best Supporting Actress, and the movie itself in Best Picture were already somewhat safe bets. Still, it’s a sign that COVID continues to be an issue for the industry, and will be for some time. Directed by Florian Zeller and written by Zeller and Christopher Hampton, “The Father” depicts an aging man struggling with dementia as his daughter moves in to take care of him. “The Truffle Hunters,” directed by Gregory Kershaw and Michael Dweck, has also been delayed from its original Christmas Day release to March 12, 2021.
