Over the weekend, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck tied the knot in a small, late-night ceremony in Las Vegas.
In her blog post about the wedding, Lopez described it as “20 years in the making.”
And in a way, that’s true.
She and Ben started dating way back in 2002, and they first got engaged in 2003.
But the A-listers called off the their engagement a few months later, and they both married and started families with different partners.
Affleck and Lopez found their way back to each other last year, and now, they’re man and wife.
For the most part, the public is happy for the newlyweds, but there have been concerns about insensitivity toward their exes, in particular, Ben’s former wife, Jennifer Garner.
Affleck was in and out of rehab for many of the years that he and Lopez were apart.
Garner was supportive throughout, even going so far as to stage an intervention and drive Ben to rehab after the two of them had ended their marriage.
On Twitter and elsewhere, observers have commented that Garner seems to have put a lot of time and effort into “fixing” Ben, only for him to end up with a different partner.
To be clear, we doubt very much that Garner is pining away for her ex, and she seems to be doing just fine in her post-Affleck life.
Still, many commenters feel that Ben and J-Lo could’ve been more sensitive in their handling of the situation.
“Ben did tell Jen about the wedding, but I’m told that it was only Friday at the earliest,” a source close to the situation tells Page Six (via Radar Online).
“It was very, very minimally planned in advance and was largely spur of the moment.
There’s been no word on whether or not Garner has given the couple her blessing, but interestingly, only one of Ben’s daughters was in attendance at the wedding, as 16-year-old Violet reportedly remained at home as a show of support for her mother.
Garner is currently hard at work shooting a movie in Lake Tahoe, and has not publicly commented on her ex’s nuptials.
There were only a handful of attendees at the wedding, so details about the ceremony have been relatively scarce.
(Lopez likely shared her blog post in the hope that that would be enough to satiate the gossip-starved masses. She was wrong, of course).
Thankfully, at least one source at the drive-through chapel where Ben and Jen got hitched has spoken to the media.
“They wanted it to be very simple,” one chapel source tells People magazine. “They were very excited.”
Asked why the couple eloped instead of planning a more traditional wedding, one source close to Lopez explains:
“Jen and Ben are so gaga in love that they wanted to get married. They are busy and wanted to make it easy and intimate in a fun setting to symbolize their happiness after so long.”
Hey, it’s their wedding, and they can do as they please.
Of course, Ben and Jen’s exes might have appreciated a bit more of a heads up.
