Kelly Clarkson is singing about her relationship with ex Brandon Blackstock on her new album Chemistry, but did she give him a heads up that it was coming out?

The 41-year-old American Idol winner unleashed the project on Friday (June 23). Conceptually, it tracks the evolution of their relationship from start to finish, including through their divorce.

During a recent interview, Kelly revealed how much advance warning she gave Brandon about the release.

While on TODAY, Kelly confirmed that she did reach out to Brandon before the release date. By the sounds of it, it wasn’t that big of a deal.

“We did have a little text exchange about it,” she said. “I don’t even remember why or how it happened, but I was like, ‘Hey, I didn’t just diminish us down to one (thing).’ You know what I’m saying? It’s all in there, the ride. The beauty is in there, as well. Now, there’s a lot of pain, but that’s what happens, for all of us.”

Does she think that Brandon cares about the project? “No,” she said, “I don’t know if he’d care either way.”

This won’t be the first time that Kelly has seemingly thrown some shade at the couple’s relationship. She previously reworked a cover of GAYLE‘s hit song “abcdefu” to fit their relationship better.
