Meri Brown, by her own admission, has a complicated relationship with her spiritual husband, Kody Brown.
The veteran Sister Wives star remains “married” to her quasi spouse, despite no sexual relationship existing between the pair and despite Meri often emphasizing how comfortable she is on her own.
But we say all of that to now say this:
There’s no such complication when it comes to Meri and her only child.
This is a relationship of pure, unadulterated love.
And Meri just proved it, too.
On Monday night, Mariah Brown made a major announcement on Instagram, telling fans and followers that she no longer wants to be known as Mariah Brown.
“someone recently told me that i didn’t have to have all of my shit figured out in order for me to share myself with the world,” the TLC personality wrote, getting to the main point as follows:
so here’s me, definitely not having almost any of my shit figured out, to let you know that i am trans. my name is Leon or Leo (i love both) and my pronouns are they/them.
Leon, who told her loved ones they were a lesbian back in 2017, continued as follows:
“i remember the first time that i knew i wasn’t a girl.
“i was pretty young & unfortunately i grew up in a context that was incredibly gendered & restrictive.
“so i continued to be socialized as a girl & later a woman. and here’s the thing, i’m finally ready to share my favorite self with the world. and that self is incredibly genderqueer, trans, and unapologetic.”
To no one’s surprise, Kody Brown hasn’t said anything in public about Leon’s transgender confirmation.
But their mom?
On Tuesday, Meri shared the same announcement as her kid via her Instagram Story, writing as a simple and supportive caption:
“You are my sunshine.”
We love it.
Concluded Leon this week:
being queer & trans are definitely some of my favorite parts of myself. and yet, there are so many things that i am learning to love about myself through this process.
here’s to me getting to know myself, share myself, and continually evolve to be the person i am, to be my favorite self in all contexts.
Back in 2017, Leon made their lesbian announcement on an episode of Sister Wives.
“This is a little unexpected. I did not see this coming… Kind of surprises me that she’s known for so long and hasn’t said anything to us,” Meri said on air in response at the time.
“When I had Mariah, you know, I had this cute little girl… I just always expected that she would grow up, meet a guy, get married, have kids.
“I see Janelle and her relationship with Madison’s husband Caleb, and I see Christine building this relationship with Tony, and I kind of always expected that.”
“I always wanted to have a son,” Meri added five years ago.
“I always kind of thought, well, you know, since I never had a son I’ll be able to kind of adopt Mariah’s husband into kind of being a son, and I looked forward to seeing who that was gonna be, you know.
“And that’s not gonna happen!”
Nope. Because things change. People change. And expectations change.
But the love never waivers.
