Naya Rivera was laid to rest on July 24, just over two weeks after her tragic death.
According to her death certificate, which was obtained by multiple outlets on Thursday, the Glee alum’s cause of death was listed as “drowning” and that she died on July 8 at Lake Piru within a manner of minutes.

The document was filed in Ventura County, California, and noted that there were no other significant conditions which contributed to her untimely passing, no drinking or drugs or injury in other words.
She had been swimming while using a rented boat with her 4-year-old son Josey Dorsey, and authorities believe she saved her son’s life but was unable to save herself due to difficult conditions in the water:
“The idea perhaps being that the boat started drifting, it was unanchored, and that she mustered enough energy to get her son back onto the boat, but not enough to save herself.”
Such an unthinkable tragedy.
Per the death certificate, Rivera’s final resting place is the celebrity-filled Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the Hollywood Hills, located close to the iconic Griffith Park and Observatory. Some famous faces reportedly buried nearby are Paul Walker, Nipsey Hussle, and John Singleton, among others.
Ryan Dorsey, the 33-year-old’s ex-husband, broke his silence on Rivera’s death the day after the burial, writing on Instagram at the time:
“Josey will have forever and know his momma loved him more than life, and how much fun we had together as he was growing up. Life is all about good times and bad times but with Josey it makes the bad a little less so because a part of you will always be with us. He’ll never forget where he came from. We miss you. We will always love you.”
After thanking his friends and fans of his ex-wife for their support and kind words, the Justified star concluded (below):
“I’ll just say in closing, be kind to yourself, be kind to others, forgive…forget…don’t hold grudges….if you have nothing nice to say maybe try not to say anything. There’s peace in silence. Time on Earth is precious and you just never know….you never know what could happen. Hold your loved ones close, and cherish the times you have with those you care about.”
We’re sending our deepest condolences to all of Naya’s loved ones, friends, and family.
