Nicole Kidman wasn’t going to let history repeat itself with her second divorce.
As we’ve been following, the Family Affair actress has officially settled her divorce from Keith Urban. Publicly, it all seemed to go very smooth… the exes confirmed their split in September, and just four months later, they’ve completely washed their hands of one another. But while their split may have seemed unproblematic on the surface, there was one big issue that reportedly sent Nicole into a spiral: custody!
The Northman actress and The Fighter singer share two daughters together, 17-year-old Sunday Rose, and 15-year-old Faith Margaret. And early into their divorce proceedings, Keith apparently wanted equal custody. A source told the DailyMail.com on Thursday:
“The one thing that became a sticking point was custody of Sunday and Faith. Keith was initially asking for equal time with their daughters.”

This was no good for Nicole, who feared her ex’s stubbornness could lead to a lengthy battle:
“It was an especially stressful time for Nic. After almost 20 years of marriage, she certainly knows how stubborn Keith can be. She was anxious and distressed that he wasn’t going to budge.”
According to the insider, she fought HARD for her daughters… not to spite Keith, but out of fear of losing the kids to her ex, as has happened in the past:
“Nicole also wanted the kids more because she wasn’t given that benefit when she divorced Tom Cruise.”
When she and Tom divorced in 2001, they agreed on joint custody of adopted children Isabella, now 32, and Connor, now 30, but they ended up choosing to live primarily with the Mission: Impossible star. The situation led to a fractured relationship with Nicole, who has been working towards repairing things.
As for what played a role in the Babygirl actress’ custody battle with Keith, the insider noted:
“Keith has a bunch of tour dates coming up, and his schedule is a little less flexible than Nicole’s. She enjoys being a homebody when she isn’t on set. And if need be, her kids can be on set with her on a more consistent basis — that is a much better atmosphere than backstage at a concert.”
As has been reported, “Nic won out.”
“It took a lot of wearing down but Keith finally agreed to her terms. Their daughters are both in their teens and need their mother more than their father at these ages. Keith knew he’d never win the battle in court and finally backed down. That’s when the divorce was settled.”
According to court filings, Keith will see Sunday and Faith just 59 days a year — every other weekend from Saturday morning to Sunday evening.
Last month, Nicole traveled with her daughters to Australia, where they celebrated Faith’s 15th birthday. According to a friend via Aussie magazine New Idea, “Not being with Faith on her special day was… like a gut punch” for Keith. The confidant added:
“[He] doesn’t know where home is anymore. He’s completely lost.”
Following their split, Keith moved out of his and Nicole’s family home in Nashville, where the Oscar-winner currently still resides with the teen girls.
The friend also told New Idea:
“He’s focusing on work because it’s the only structure he has left. But without Nicole and the girls, he has no compass.”
But he’ll find his way… A second insider told DailyMail.com:
“Keith is eager to move forward from divorce as the pain of it is subsiding much quicker than he thought. He is looking to enjoy the single life and follow his one true love — making and performing music. He’s interested in letting life happen and if that includes new love, so be it. But he’s not after anyone in particular right this second, nor is he ready to get back on the horse, but if something were to happen, he’d like to enjoy it and not push it away just because he’s now recently divorced. He’s looking to enjoy his bachelorhood, however that turns out.”
