Elemental is unfortunately not burning up at the box office.
The movie debuted to a record-worst $29.6 million at the box office in its opening weekend, marking the lowest three-day weekend start in the history of Pixar, adjusting 1995′s Toy Story opening for inflation, via THR.
Elemental‘s projected four-day domestic opening over the long Juneteenth holiday weekend is $33.4 million.
One of the big issues that Disney and Pixar are up against is original vs. established IP, and having success with introducing new stories.
“Original versus branded IP is also a crucial issue for Walt Disney Animation Studios, which saw Strange World fall flat last year. Disney execs will be watching closely to see if Disney Animation’s original upcoming Thanksgiving offering Wish fares can break the curse facing original animated fare,” THR also notes in their analysis.
Elemental is an all-new, original feature film set in Element City, where Fire-, Water-, Earth- and Air-residents live together. The story introduces Ember (voice of Leah Lewis), a fiery young woman, whose friendship with a fun and sappy guy named Wade (voice of Mamoudou Athie) challenges her beliefs about the world they live in.
