Samuel L. Jackson is speaking out on behalf of Brie Larson.

The 74-year-old actor got candid in a new interview with Rolling Stone about his 33-year-old Marvel Cinematic Universe co-star, who has faced significant backlash and trolling online ever since being cast as Captain Marvel.

The two first met on the set of 2017′s Kong: Skull Island, followed by his casting in her directorial debut, Unicorn Store. Donald Trump‘s election as president during the film further bonded the two.

“She was broken and I was like, ‘Don’t let ‘em break you. You have to be strong now’…she called me and was like, ‘They want me in the Marvel Universe. Should I do it?’ And I was like, ‘Hell yeah! Let’s do it!’”
