Jennifer Aniston has won accolades and even a Screen Actors Guild Award for her role on The Morning Show. But someone was a little less than impressed — the woman her character was supposedly based on!
The drama series, which premiered last November, follows the struggle of morning news show anchor Alex Levy after her longtime on-air partner Mitch Kessler (played by Steve Carell) crashes and burns thanks to a sexual misconduct scandal.
Sound familiar? Yes, it’s very clearly based loosely on the real-life fall of Matt Lauer, with Jen’s character being an analogue for Katie Couric. Katie never spoke in detail about the show or Aniston’s performance throughout award season, which may have been a kindness as it turns out.

On Monday, the woman who co-hosted the real Today show for a decade and a half finally gave her two cents on the The Morning Show. During an interview on the Everything Iconic With Danny Pellegrino podcast, Katie revealed she had watched the series, teasing:
“I thought it was really interesting to watch… but it was very interesting for me to watch, I’ll just leave it at that.”
Leave it at that?? Gurl, it’s a show that’s basically about one of the most publicly messy chapters of your career, and it’s just “interesting”?
Thankfully she said a little more about its representation of the effects of a sexual misconduct scandal on not just the accused but on those around him or her:
“I have so many thoughts… I thought some of it was really interesting, and i think the long-term impact and the serious devastation that results from certain behaviors was quite well represented, or quite well conveyed in that.”
BUT the most inneresting quote, without question, came when Katie critiqued the TV version of herself, saying:
“I think Jennifer Aniston is great…”
But??
“I wish they had made her more charismatic because I think you need a certain ebullience to pull off a show like that.”
Whoa! Did she… did she just say Jennifer Aniston wasn’t charismatic enough to be believable as a daytime TV host?
It certainly sounds like it. But maybe she’s just referring to the way the show was shot, the tone or something?
Listen to the interview for yourself (below) then let us know what YOU think!
So do YOU think Katie was throwing shade at her fictional counterpart?
