Oh no, no, no. This is absolutely not the headline anyone wanted to read coming out of the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Lindsey Vonn, the iconic, fearless, comeback-queen of American skiing, was brutally injured during the women’s downhill final and had to be airlifted off the mountain after a horrifying crash that left fans and fellow athletes completely shaken.
The crash happened just 13 seconds into her run, which somehow makes it even more gut-wrenching. Vonn’s right ski pole reportedly got caught in a course marker, throwing her completely off balance at high speed. What followed was the kind of nightmare tumble no athlete ever wants to experience, with Lindsey being launched through the air multiple times before slamming back down onto the mountain.

If that wasn’t upsetting enough, microphones picked up Vonn yelling “Oh my God” in pain as medical personnel rushed to her side. She was carefully placed on a stretcher while the crowd watched in stunned silence, and then she was airlifted off the course.

According to the US Ski and Snowboard Team, the 41-year-old superstar is thankfully in stable condition.
The team confirmed the update in a statement shared to X (Twitter) on Sunday:
“Lindsey Vonn sustained an injury, but is in stable condition and in good hands with a team of American and Italian physicians.”
Watching from the stands was Lindsey’s sister, Karin Kildow, who spoke during NBC’s broadcast and summed up exactly what everyone at home was feeling:
“That definitely was the last thing we wanted to see. It happened quick. So when that happens you’re just immediately hoping she’s okay. It was scary because when you start to see the stretchers being put out, that is not a good sign.”
What makes this even more intense is that Vonn already went into this race knowing the risks. Just one week earlier, she had torn her ACL and still made the decision to compete in what she’s said would be her final Olympics.
Kildow acknowledged that reality with heartbreaking honesty:
“I know she put her whole heart into it and sometimes, just, like, things happen. It’s a very dangerous sport. And there are a lot of variables at play. I don’t really know exactly what happened. It did look like a pretty rough fall. We’re just hoping for the best.”
Ugh. This is terrible. Lindsey Vonn has always been the definition of grit and courage, but right now none of that matters more than her health.
We are genuinely wishing her the best and hoping for a smooth recovery after such a scary Olympics moment.
