The Weeknd Says Writing ‘Cathartic’ Selena Gomez Breakup Songs Helped Him Get Over Their Split!

Like so many other artists out there, The Weeknd realized there’s nothing better than pouring your heart out into the music when you’re really going through it!

In a new interview with Esquire, the 30-year-old singer (real name Abel Tesfaye) opened up about the part of his discography that defined him best. During the chat, he spoke at length about his 2018 EP, My Dear Melancholy — you know, the project that came out shortly after he broke up with Selena Gomez before she went back to a then-single Justin Bieber for the umpteenth time? Yep, that one!

The six-track record was seemingly full of references to the Wolves singer, as well as another one of The Weeknd’s famous exes, Bella Hadid. But who could forget the iconic song Call Out My Name, which featured pointed lyrics like “I helped you out of a broken place” and “Guess I was just another pit stop ’til you made up your mind” which seemingly took direct shots at Selly without ever mentioning her name?

There was also a line that went, “I almost cut a piece of myself out for your life,” which is said to be a reference to the life-saving kidney transplant Gomez underwent the same year the couple split. As you’ll likely recall, the songstress eventually got the kidney from her friend, Francia Raisa.

While the Canadian-born artist said those songs did not define him or his career, he admitted it felt so “cathartic” to release that project when he was struggling to get over the split. He told the outlet:

“The reason why it was so short is like, I think I just had nothing else to say on this. Whatever. It was just, like, this cathartic piece of art. And yeah, it was short, because that’s all I had to say on the situation.”

Tesfaye told the mag it took him just two and a half weeks to write, record, and put out the EP, while also confirmed that writing it did actually make him feel better post-split.

“Yeah, of course. I mean, that would have sucked if I didn’t.”

Or else you’d have to perform those songs and experience the pain all over again without any real relief — and that doesn’t sound like fun. Selenators might not appreciate the tunes, but it sounds like he holds no regrets about putting them out. In fact, the pair of exes made back-and-forth references about the relationship in their music for quite a bit as they figured out their respective love lives. Their pain essentially became our playlists!

As fans remember, The Weeknd and Selena started seeing each other at the beginning of 2017, only months following his breakup from Hadid. They broke up later that Fall and the Disney alum went right back to the Biebs (who’s now married to Hailey Baldwin), while the I Cant Feel My Face singer got back together with Bella months later in 2018. Though the latter pair split again in 2019, they have seemingly remained friendly in the aftermath of the breakup. As far as we know, Miz Gomez is still single!
