[Warning: Potentially Triggering Content]
Over the weekend, a quiet worry turned into a full-blown nightmare for popular daytime TV host Savannah Guthrie and her loved ones, as concern for her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, escalated into an urgent call for help after she went missing from her Arizona home.
And now, we know how it all started. It didn’t begin with flashing lights or sirens from cops, either — it began with a simple and (at first) seemingly innocent absence.

On Sunday morning, Nancy didn’t show up to church. That was the trigger. Because for someone who was expected there every Sunday by her friends, that absence spoke loudly. Immediately after that, a friend from church did what people hope their friends would do in moments like this: they didn’t shrug it off. Rather, they made a call to one of Nancy’s adult children, setting off a chain of events that no family ever wants to experience.
Nancy was last seen the night before, after 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, at her home in the Catalina Foothills area north of Tucson. And when family members went to check on her following her no-show Sunday morning at church, what they found was concerning enough that searching on their own didn’t feel like enough. So, they called 911.
From there, the situation intensified quickly. The search mission soon drew airplanes, helicopters, drones, and specially trained dogs. Authorities described the scene at Nancy’s home as concerning, and homicide detectives were brought in to try to figure out what was going on.
As we’ve reported, cops have said Nancy does not suffer from cognitive issues and is considered alert and of sound mind. But she does have physical ailments that limit her mobility. Furthermore, she requires medication that could be life-threatening if missed for more than 24 hours. The cold weather only added another layer of urgency and fear to the already grim picture.
By Monday, authorities confirmed Nancy’s home was officially being treated as a crime scene rather than just the starting point of a search. The sheriff made a public plea for anyone with information to come forward, stressing the desperate hope to avoid a tragic ending. Savannah, who was absent from the Today show on Monday, is confirmed to be in Arizona with her family, too.
This is so scary. We honestly can’t even imagine what the Guthrie is going through right now…
