An alleged former roommate of Nick Reiner is speaking out and claiming his disturbing behavior traced all the way back to when he was just a teen.
While speaking with DailyMail.com recently, a man named Danny Svilar claimed to have stayed in a high-end rehab facility with Nick when they were both just 15. And when he heard the news of Rob and Michele Reiner‘s deaths? Well, he had one chilling thought:
“As soon as I saw that Rob Reiner and his wife Michele were murdered, I knew exactly who it was.”
Whoa.
Danny describes himself as a recovering shopping addict, and he said he befriended Nick — and even met Rob and Michele — over the course of their time together in rehab.
They’d stay up late exchanging stories and chatting in their room. Now, at 32, Danny says Nick’s family was just doing “everything they could” at the time to get him help, but all the accused murderer would do is rant through the night about “how much he f**king hated his parents”.
He said Nick really resented his parents’ “fame”:
“He just had really oppressed anger towards the fame. I don’t know how it is having a father with that level of fame, but regardless of that, Nick had no sense of gratitude, no sense of appreciation. He was just a f**king pompous little punk… he just wanted to be out, smoking pot, doing pills, doing whatever, and his family just wanted him to get help.”
Jeez… How sad.
As far as how Danny and Nick ended up as roommates back in 2009? He explained:
“My mom staged an intervention on me and shipped me off to Malibu after I spent $250,000 on my father’s credit card. Nick was my first roommate. From the get-go, he was pretty welcoming, pretty funny. But at the same time, there was this side of him which could just, like, flip.”
Danny described how their short-lived friendship came to an end through a fight. Nick has long been known to struggle with drug addiction — and when Danny said he looked like John Travolta‘s son Jett who’d recently passed away at the time, Nick snapped:
“I compared him to looking like John Travolta’s son that died, and that set him off. We had good rapport at first, but then I was like ‘oh my god, that’s who you remind me of’. It kind of turned ugly after that… He definitely tried to get aggressive with me. He tried to get physical, and then a tech had to step in… He was getting into my face and raising a fist.”

This wasn’t the only moment with Nick that rubbed Danny the wrong way, though. He said:
“We would talk at night after lights were out, and some of the things that he would say really threw me the wrong way. Because I’m a 15-year-old boy in the same room as somebody with a crazy addiction. It was very, very chilling, but also, a crazy new experience for me.”
He also didn’t like Nick’s alleged hatred of his parents:
“The parents of these children with money, they usually are not truly involved in wanting to help them, or do this or that. They have a hired hand, basically, being their handler, if you will. Lots of the kids in there had absent parents who relied on nannies. But Rob and Michele were there for every single family group. They were there for every therapy session. They didn’t have to give me the time of day.”
Danny added a memory of Rob, too:
“I played frisbee with Rob. Rob Reiner, for God’s sake. They just wanted to get him well.”
Aww…
He had some harsh words for the upcoming murder case, saying of Nick following his schizophrenia diagnosis:
“I would hate to see him try to plead this guilty or not guilty by insanity, when in reality he told me how much he f**king hated his parents, especially his father. He really truly had no cause to hate them except for the fact that they are the reason for a lot of his problems, and that boiled down to the fame.”
Danny claims he and Nick “lost touch” — but since he kept up with other people from the rehab, he learned a lot about his “repetitive state” relapses and stints in different facilities. He claimed to have heard from friends that Nick was “doing great” after filming Being Charlie with his dad, but “started going downhill” again soon after:
“Whether he relapsed, or whether it was his mental disorder, I don’t know … [I felt] chilled to the bone. Everybody knew it was him [that committed the murders].”
Right now, Danny is definitely feeling the loss like the rest of us. And he wants to make sure everyone knows Rob and Michele did “everything they could for” Nick:
“They just wanted him to be well, and he did not want to be well. The hatred is just one thing that really got to me. All of us in there, we all had our gripes with our parents. But at the end of the day, we were grateful for what we had. Him, on the other hand, not so much.”
Wrapping up, he said:
“I’m not normally one to go to the press, but I want to convey to the world how great Rob and Michele Reiner were — and that Nick is not insane.”
A lot to take in…
It’s important to note that while this person’s experience may very well be true, that was back when Nick was a teenager. It’s not uncommon for kids that age to say they “hate” their parents. Nick is 32 now, and close family sources all believed he had been sober and doing very well in the months leading up to the chilling crimes. In fact, insiders believe what really caused this was a change in his mental health medication:
“Nick’s symptoms took a turn for the worse after doctors adjusted his medication before the killings, which the family believes, triggered increasingly concerning behavior … The family feels this was all a massive failure in his care and they firmly believe he was seriously ill when he did this.”
Our heart continues to be with Rob and Michele’s loved ones. May they rest in peace.
