In The Contender: The Story of Marlon Brando, author William J. Mann details the actor’s life using new and revelatory material from the late star’s own private archives.

The legendary thespian — also known as Bud — was born on April 3, 1924 in Omaha, Nebraska to mom Dodie Pennebaker Brando, “someone who saw the beauty in life,” and dad Marlon Brando Sr., “a card-carrying pr**k’, a silent, brooding, angry man” who was allegedly abusive towards his family.
After one incident — where Marlon threatened to kill his father if he hit his mother one more time — Brando Jr. was sent to Shattuck Military Academy in Minnesota “to straighten out.”
While at school, Marlon was introduced to drama classes, and allegedly had sexual relations with another male cadet.
Mann wrote:
“The relationship was nothing extraordinary; sexual play between cadets at military schools was not uncommon.”
In fact, Brando made no judgements about another person’s sexuality.
“He was a man utterly at ease with his fluid sexuality, someone who blithely disregarded the binaries of love and gender.”
Eventually, he made his way to New York where he took acting classes with Stella Adler — and even had a reported relationship with her daughter, Ellen.
Brando remembered:
“There was a lot of f**king going on and I was in the thick of it.”
At the time, he also reportedly had relationships with Celia, a window dresser, and Blossom Plumb, a classmate.
Throughout his life, Brando had several alleged flings with other celebrities.
On the 20th Century Fox lot, he met West Side Story actress Rita Moreno — who found him “swaggeringly irresistible.”
She later wrote in her 2013 memoir:
“To say that he was a great lover — sensual, generous, delightfully inventive — would be gravely understating what he did not only to my body, but for my soul. Every aspect of being with Marlon was thrilling, because he was more engaged in the world than anyone else I’d ever known.”
Per several sources, Brando also had a thing with Marilyn Monroe in 1955 following her divorce from Joe DiMaggio and before her marriage to Arthur Miller. Mann penned:
“Monroe was hardly Marlon’s type but she had an earthy sense of humor that he would have liked.”
Additionally, many believe Brando had sex with comedian Richard Pryor.
However, despite what Quincy Jones and Pryor’s widow — Jennifer Lee — claim, Marlon’s son Miko disputes the rumor.
Brando is quoted in the book, saying:
“I had a lot of affairs. Far too many to describe me as a perfectly normal, reasonable, intelligent person.”
He allegedly slept with the wives of his friends, as he believed married women were more exciting to pursue.
Mann summed it best when he wrote:
“‘When I awake in the morning, the first thing I think about is, who am I going to f**k today?’ — even if there was a woman sleeping beside him.”
In 2004, Brando died of respiratory failure from pulmonary fibrosis with congestive heart failure.
