It’s very interesting to hear Dax Shepard be so open about his past insecurities and inadequacies.
The movie star opened up quite a bit on the latest episode of his popular podcast, Armchair Expert, during which he dished on his short-lived 2007 relationship with Kate Hudson. Even better yet, Kate — and her bro, Oliver — were on the podcast too, and the Almost Famous star was able to shed her own light on a very interesting time in both of their lives!

The podcast host recalled the time period as one of uncertainty in his own career, as he explained to the audience that his own career was going downhill while Kate’s trajectory was quickly exploding to stardom at the same time! Dax recalled (below):
“I think I was just at the point where I was not going to get hired for movies anymore. I had a bunch that didn’t work. And, I’m like, ‘I don’t f**king know what’s next.’ And you [Kate] were, at that time, making the most you ever made and having the most opportunity and I felt very much like, ‘F**k, I don’t know what I’m doing. I’m following this person around as they do things I wish I were doing.’ It was just a rough period for me anyways. Then I felt all kind of inadequacy in that position.”
Wow! That’s very honest, to be sure!
The craziest part of it all, as Shepard recalled, is that after meeting during a party at Tobey Maguire‘s house and hitting it off, the two went out for dinner in Malibu and joked around about creating a phony relationship to fool the public into thinking they were dating. (Ahhhh, 2007 was such a simpler time! LOLz!)
Anyways, Shepard “fully committed” to the fake boyfriend role, the prank led to the pair hanging out more, and one thing led to another… right into a relationship!
The 40-year-old How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days star recalled the moment the phony relationship turned real (below):
“Then all of a sudden I wanted to have to sex with him! It was the perfect move.”
LOLz!!!
But after a few months of real dating, Hudson explained that the timing just wasn’t right for them — and a mutual ending was the way to go:
“I was out of a relationship that was really hardcore, then Dax and I — it was so much fun and then it got hot fast. It got connective, and I wasn’t prepared. I was making a movie, I had [son] Ryder. I was so backed out that when he met his now-wife, which was not long after we broke up, it was, like, gung-ho time for you. You were ready for a real relationship.”
And a real relationship, Shepard got!
As we all know, he quickly met and fell in love with Kristen Bell, and the two of them are still going strong today.

Still, the former Punk’d co-star credits Hudson with getting him ready for his lifetime love with Bell — and it sounds like all is well that ends well, at least in this case:
“I was ready to have kids and do it. [But with Kate] I literally learned how to say, ‘When you do this, I’m scared and I feel this way,’ because you and I had fights that I really hadn’t had with people. We had some big old barn burners.”
Hey, anything to prepare ya for the real thing, right?!
From all we can tell, everything here ended up working out pretty well for both Dax and Kate, didn’t it?! What a crazy look back in time!
