After spending some time in prison herself, Felicity Huffman Macy is seeing things from an entirely new perspective — and hopefully changing lots of lives for the better in the process!
William H. Macy‘s wife, who famously spent a little time behind bars earlier this year as part of the sentence for her role in the college admissions scandal, is also required to do 250 hours of community service, as well. And as it turns out, she’s doing something great with that time, helping other women as they adjust to life after prison!

Huffman had already been an active volunteer with various causes throughout her high-profile acting career, but for her community service requirements as part of the college admissions fallout, she linked up with a Los Angeles-based non-profit call A New Way of Life. Founded in 1998 by former inmate and recovered addict Susan Burton, the organization “helps formerly incarcerated women safely re-enter their community, find housing and jobs, and become productive, thriving members of society,” according to a profile in People.
Now, according to Burton herself, the 56-year-old Huffman has thrown herself into helping out in ways big and small — and Felicity’s down-to-earth personality and warm nature in building relationships with the women along the way hasn’t hurt, either.
Burton told the mag (below):
“Felicity is a such a down to earth genuine caring person [and] she’s been very helpful and supportive to the women here. She has connected with them in a real way and you can feel it. I think that is because they know she’s experienced in a small way what they have gone through being incarcerated.”
Nice!
Most recently, the actress has been helping the group prepare for their December 8 gala in downtown El Lay — something that sounds like it’s right up Huffman’s alley:
“Felicity has been helping the women pick out dresses for the gala this Sunday [and] she’ll be helping us set up the event. She’s been cooking for the women, cleaning the homes, shopping and answering the phone. We love having her here.”
So great!!!
It’s wonderful to see somebody high-profile like Huffman help such an amazing cause, and work with such an incredible person like Burton to make real change. ‘Tis the season for feel-good stories like this, we suppose, but seriously — we are so happy this one has apparently turned out so well!
