Despite only one nomination and zero wins on the night, Beyoncé has quickly become one of the hottest topics of the 2020 Golden Globes.
No, it’s not because she and husband JAY-Z skipped the red carpet and showed up an hour late to the show. And no, it had nothing to do with the fact that the power couple shamelessly brought their own brand of bubbly to the awards ceremony on Sunday, either.
As it turns out, the Lemonade singer upset quite a few critics for remaining seated when Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actor in a Motion Picture — Drama for his role in Joker!

When the 45-year-old got up to claim the coveted trophy, almost everyone in the room responded with a standing ovation. Everyone except Queen Bey, that is!
We have no idea why the entertainer chose not to get up from her seat (and we probably never will, she rarely comments on these things), however, we have to applaud the camera guy for catching the seemingly innocuous move for us all to see.
In case you missed the broadcast, ch-ch-check out the supposed snub captured (below):
It’s worth noting Bey did appear to give the actor a round of applause. But her decision to sit while others stood left Twitter fiercely divided!
As we hinted earlier, some felt the former Destiny’s Child frontwoman’s move was very disrespectful. One particularly bothered user wrote:
@Beyonce You’re a joke for not standing up for Joaquin Phoenix. Understandable to make a statement. But that’s just poor sportsmanship for someone that actually deserved recognition. You’re entitled and arrogant. And as an actress you’re a joke. Smh. You ought to apologize to him

And others echoed that sentiment with more angry comments:
“Out of respect, she should’ve stood up. Wtf
“Pretty rude, tbh”
“thoroughly distasteful”
“Why is everyone praising Beyonce not standing for Joaquin Phoenix? She’s classless.”
“It makes her look bad tbh. And I’m a Beyoncé fan. I thought it was because her dress would have blocked others view and she was being courteous.”
Meanwhile, those who spoke up in defense of Blue Ivy‘s momma argued her custom Schiaparelli couture gown and its massive gold shoulder pads might have blocked the camera’s view of Joaquin!

And read those supportive fan reactions, too:
“Let’s not create any mess here.. she most likely didnt stand because she would be in way when he walked by. She smiled and clapped”
“i know y’all are not hating on beyoncé just because she didn’t stand up for joaquin when he won 😭 get over yourselves”
“Just putting it out there. MAYBE Beyoncé didn’t stand during Joaquin Phoenix’s standing ovation because her dress was massive & would have been a pain to get out of her chair with and then gather it to sit down again. Just a thought. Maybe it wasn’t a statement. #GoldenGlobes”
“Let me get out these comments before I go off on one of y’all. It was probably hard for her to stand in her dress. Y’all need to mind your businesssssss!”
Hmm…
So, as you can see, people had a LOT of feelings about it! But this user seemed to have a much different takeaway from the whole debacle:
Joaquin Phoenix just did a speech about global warming and how celebrities should start doing changes themselves personally instead of putting the responsibility in other people and then clean their hands. But somehow Beyonce not giving him a standing ovation is more important… pic.twitter.com/GyjH9mBDQa

So, was Beyoncé caught in a literal tight situation with her dress? Was she not-so-secretly not a fan of Phoenix’s Joker? Or is this whole thing a ridiculous mess blown completely out of proportion?
