Unsurprisingly, Billy Porter‘s look for the Grammys on Sunday had us in awe!
The Pose star has garnered a reputation for rocking outlandish red carpet outfits, from gilded wings at the Met Gala to massive hats at the Emmys, but last night’s ensem might just be our favorite yet.
And as it turns out, we’re not alone!

Speaking with Vanity Fair ahead of the award show, the 50-year-old explained he does not feel like he has to one-up his past jaw-dropping looks, but just keep innovating for the future:
“It’s not a competition. We do this for fun. The minute that it’s not fun is the minute I stop doing it. It’s not about topping, it’s not about pressure, it’s not about any of that.”
And in regards to the design of his epic hat, the star added:
“This design is a great compromise. It’s a reveal. The crystal curtain stays open, unless you get on my nerves and then I can shut you right out!”
Porter’s look was designed by Baja East creative director Scott Studenberg, and featured over 70,000 Preciosa crystals. The crystal fringe — made possible by SmoothTechnology — on the custom piece was designed by Sarah Sokol Millinery also in collaboration with Baja East. He finished off the look with Alexis Bittar jewelry, a Judith Leiber handbag, and custom Coach boots.

For those who didn’t know, the topper was actually inspired by another red carpet risk-taker: Billie Eilish. As you may recall, the 18-year-old wore a Burberry bonnet to the American Music Awards in November, and Billy was a big fan! Stylist Sam Ratelle (who controlled the motorized fringe on Sunday) explained to VF:
“Billy and Billie Eillish had a beautiful moment on the red carpet at the [American Music Awards] where they both gushed over each other’s hats. Billie was wearing a Victorian inspired beekeeper bonnet with netting covering her face. After the event, Billy jokingly told me he loved her look but after 30 years of working his way to Hollywood, ‘y’all are gonna see my face!'”
Not only did his look inspire us to take more risks with our own fashion choices, but it also sparked a TON of memes. Here are a few of the best:
