Each of Kris Jenner‘s grandchildren have a unique story behind their monikers, and we’re here to clue you in on all the details in case you haven’t been keeping up…
Mason Dash Disick
The first KarJenner grandbaby Mason Dash Disick was born on December 14, 2009. Back in 2010, momma Kourtney Kardashian explained the reasoning behind her son’s name:
“Right before he was born, I told my aunt we were thinking about going with that for a name. She told me that Mason means the same thing in English that Kardashian means in Armenian—stone worker. Another aunt told me my great uncle used to use the name Mason when he made dinner reservations, because Kardashian was too long.”
And as for Dash, it’s not because of the now-defunct clothing store once owned by the Kardashian sisters! Dash was actually the late Robert Kardashian‘s nickname.
Penelope Scotland Disick
Kourt and Scott Disick‘s only daughter Penelope Scotland Disick was born on July 8, 2012, and the reasoning behind her name is fairly straightforward!
The parents simply thought the name Penelope was cute, Kris Jenner told E! News at the time. And as for her middle name, it doesn’t have anything to do with the country. Great-grandma MJ Houghton suggested it, and it stuck!
North West
North West, born to Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West on June 15, 2013 was the first Kar-cousin to come along! Her momma explained the unique name to British GQ:
“I remember this is actually where we decided, finally, on North as a name for our baby girl. It was a rumor in the press and we’d never really considered it seriously, at all, but Kanye and I were having lunch right over there at that table about a year ago and Pharrell came over to us and said ‘Oh, my God, are you guys really going to call your daughter North? That is the best name.’ I said ‘No we’re not, that’s just a rumor.”
She continued:
“Then a little while later Anna Wintour came over and asked the same thing. She told us ‘North is a genius name.’ Kanye and I looked at one another and just laughed. I guess at that point it sort of stuck.”
Reign Aston Disick
Reign Aston Disick, born on the same day as big bro Mason, was almost named something completely different! His momma explained on Jimmy Kimmel Live! during an appearance with her sisters:
“I was like, ‘I know in my soul his name is Reign,’ and Scott didn’t believe me. And I was like, ‘No. I know his name is Reign.’ And he’s like, ‘His name is Preston.’ So I was like, ‘Fine. Let’s call him Preston for a day.’ And it didn’t work out.”
She also takes full credit for his middle name, which makes his initials RAD.
Saint West
Kim hasn’t been shy when it comes to discussing her difficult time not only conceiving, but carrying her children. Following the birth of her second child, Saint West, on December 5, 2015 she actually had to get five different surgeries to deal with the complications. As for her son’s name, sources shared at the time they chose Saint “because she had such a difficult pregnancy,” and saw it as a “blessing” that she was able to carry him.
Dream Renée Kardashian
Born on November 10, 2016 to Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna, Dream Renée Kardashian is a true dream come true! An insider revealed to People following her birth:
“Rob and Chyna had the name Dream for a long time. They named her Dream because they’ve always said she’s a dream come true.”
As for her middle name, it’s a mommy and me affair! Dreamy shares Renée with her momma, whose given name is Angela Renée White.
Chicago West
Kim and Ye’s third child, Chicago West, was welcomed via surrogate on January 15, 2018. While appearing on The Ellen Show shortly after Chi was born, the KKW Beauty founder revealed being initially hesitant to name her:
“That is a place that made him. And a place that he remembers his family from. He really wanted his mother’s name, and I love that name too, I just wasn’t sure…it’s so much to live up to. I just felt like Chicago was cool and different.”
Stormi Webster
Born on February 1, 2018 to Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott, Stormi Webster was actually kept a secret as she grew inside her momma! In May 2019, the Kylie Cosmetics mogul took to her Instagram Live and explained the reasoning behind her daughter’s unique name:
“I looked up names and I saw Storm and I really like that, but i wanted her to have an ‘ie’ at the end of her name like me. Kylie and Stormie. So, it was that at first and when I was pregnant I used to call her Stormi when I would talk to her in my belly and it just always felt right. I had one more name that I liked. I had two names that I honestly liked better than Stormi, but when I had her I just felt like she chose her own name and I just couldn’t imagine any other name other than Stormi.”
True Thompson
Khloé Kardashian fell in line with her sisters and chose a unique name for her little girl, True Thompson. A few days after welcoming her into the world on April 12, 2018, fans scratched their heads at the name choice, but “lovey” Kris swooped in to explain via IG:
“FUN FACT… my Grandfather’s name on my Dad’s side was True Otis Houghton. My real Dad’s name was Robert True Houghton…so i am so excited Khloe named her daughter True!!!”
Psalm West
Much like his big brother and sisters, Psalm West‘s moniker (he was born May 10, 2019) was criticized from the moment it was announced! Though it’s obviously a religious reference, it wasn’t until Kris stepped in on her daughter’s behalf and explained the meaning to Entertainment Tonight (below) that we learned more:
“The inspiration was the Book of Psalms in the Bible. I think it’s just a wonderful way to celebrate how they feel. And he’s such a blessing, so it’s perfect. He’s just adorable.”
Not only is he a blessing, but he is believed by his momma to be her late father reincarnated. She explained:
“My baby nurse, I had to go out of town and I really needed her to come in. But she had a baby shower that she had to go to. And I said, ‘It’s okay, you can bring my son to the baby shower, if that’s okay with you.’ I really needed the help. She brings him to a baby shower, and a woman comes up to her and said, ‘Is this your son?’ And she said, ‘No, no, no, I’m just watching him.’ And she said, ‘Well, I just have to tell you, please tell their mom this is a family member of hers reincarnated.'”
