What’s in a name, after all? Well, not numerical characters, apparently! At least not based on California law!
This week, Elon Musk and Grimes confirmed that they were forced to change their infant son’s name, which infamously had been previously reported to be X Æ A-12 Musk. That naming convention — and specifically the ’12’ in there — doesn’t fly in the Golden State, however, and so changes must be made for them to put an acceptable name on a birth certificate.

Apparently, the issue arose when people started digging and discovered that in California law, no baby can be named anything at birth that involves any other characters besides the 26 in the alphabet. Because the number 12 (or, the characters ‘1’ and ‘2’) are numerical, and not part of the alphabet, they are ineligible for a legal name and can’t be used at all. Crazy, right?!
Grimes confirmed as much on Instagram over the weekend, in an exchange with a follower where the musician and artist relayed info about how they’d actually altered the boy’s name to comply with the law for birth certificates. As you can see (below), the name itself is still SUPER thirsty, but at least it’s legal now, or something:
OK, so, the new name is X Æ A-Xii Musk. Yeah… still kind of out there, but… Ooooookay!
As Grimes mentioned to a fan in a later comment about the change, Roman numerals do look better when you’re comparing them to an actual number in someone’s name, we suppose. Still, it’s not exactly like this name is all of a sudden normal or something now, ya know?! Like, come on, y’all…
Anyways, as you’ll recall from our previous reporting, Musk recently told Joe Rogan how the name itself is pronounced, saying:
“I mean it’s just X, the letter X. And then, the Æ is, like, pronounced ‘Ash’… and then, A-12, A-12 is my contribution.”
…Yeah. Presumably, the whole thing is still pronounced roughly the same from here, just with those roman numerals in place as opposed to the number itself.
Seems pretty simple to us! LOLz!!!!

What do U think about the new name, Perezcious readers? Cool, quirky, progressive, forward-thinking, any of the above?! Or is it an abomination??
