Ed Westwick Responds To Backlash Over Fake Gossip Girl Tease!

Ed Westwick didn’t mean to upset all the Upper East Siders who still love him with his misleading Gossip Girl-themed tweet.

Over the weekend, the actor sent fans of the beloved CW show into a tizzy when he teased an upcoming announcement that involved the drama’s infamous tagline, “XOXO,” tweeting:

“Got a little something for you… Tomorrow 1pm.. Hint… xoxo.”

That’s right: XOXO. The iconic words spoken by Gossip Girl herself.

Naturally, this message made some fans believe Ed, who starred in the series’ original run, could be involved in the recently announced Gossip Girl reboot for HBO Max after all. As you may recall, the show has cut ties with Westwick after numerous rape accusations against him back in 2018. So yeah, he ain’t comin’ back.

But Chuck Bass still has his devotees, and they were disappointed to find out that it was something completely different he was trying to promote: support of the Black Lives Matter movement!

On Monday, the 32-year-old revealed his “XOXO”-related news was a protective face mask that will benefit anti-racism organization, Kick It Out. He took to Instagram to post a photo of himself modeling the “XOXO” face mask and wrote in the caption:

“I think we could all agree the world could use some hugs and kisses right now. Help me raise money for @kickitout to combat racism & discrimination for everyone who plays, watches or works in football by shopping my collection with @represent. Let’s all work together to make a difference!”

In an attempt to quell the somewhat negative response from GG die-hards, Westwick wrote on Twitter

“For those of you that are upset about teasing my collection with the design graphic to raise money for @KickItOut: I hope you can check out the charity and learn more about their mission, who they are helping and the impact it will make in our world to combat racism and discrimination. It is important to me to use my platform to spread love, bring awareness to various organizations and do what I can to make a difference. Love, Ed.”

He added:

“While a GG reboot would be a great distraction, this is not the time for distractions. It is important we focus on the issues at hand, and do what we can to help, even if we think it’s something small.”

Right. It’s a distraction. That’s why he isn’t bothering with the show anymore. And not the MULTIPLE RAPE ACCUSATIONS.

This all comes weeks after it was revealed that the Gossip Girl reboot — which will follow a new group of students at an elite NYC private school — was delayed until 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
