Johnny Depp spent most of the first week of his libel trial against UK tabloid The Sun trying to convincingly deny he’d ever abused not just Amber Heard but any woman he’d been with.
Most of his former flames have actually supported that claim, with exes from Winona Ryder to Vanessa Paradis speaking out on the actor’s behalf.
But one incident which has continued to stick out in the public’s mind is one which cemented Johnny’s reputation as a bad boy over two decades ago. And on Friday he finally got asked about it.

Once again the Oscar nominee took the stand to answer tough questions — this time about that infamous night in 1994 when he trashed a hotel room while then-girlfriend Kate Moss was there.
Johnny admitted to the incident, telling his own attorney David Sherborne — who was the first to bring up the incident to get ahead of it — he had offered to pay for the reported $10k in damages:
“I actually told the security guard when he came to my room that I was more than willing to pay for everything I had broken.”
When asked where the 20-year-old model was at the time, Johnny acknowledged she was right there in the middle of the rampage:
“She was in the bedroom sleeping.”
The court was even shown a video from an old ABC News interview in which he famously quipped, “some guys play golf, some guys smash hotel rooms.”
Sasha Wass, attorney for the defendant, asked about the reason for the tantrum, something Johnny claimed was anger over a friend having “screwed him over.” The attorney suggested it was actually anger at his girlfriend — part of a pattern of violence. But Johnny denied this, saying:
“Ms. Moss wasn’t involved in any of it, there was no spat.”
If he’s telling the truth, a lot of people have had the wrong view of that event for many, many years.
Johnny again denied ever having hit Ms. Moss or any other previous wife or girlfriend, saying he had never even been accused of it before.
However, one woman who hasn’t had the Pirates of the Caribbean star’s back through all this? Ellen Barkin.
Johnny was asked about public statements the Big Easy star had made that he was “jealous” and “controlling” and that there was “always an air of violence” about him. Technically not accusations of abuse, but not statement that looked good.

The answer delved into some more dirty laundry — Johnny claimed his Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas co-star said those things because she held a “grudge” against him — after they’d had a sexual relationship that ended badly:
“Ms Barkin and I had been friends for a number of years. A couple of years later (after her divorce) Ellen and I were hanging, just spending time together… A sexual element began with Ms Barkin which lasted for months on and off really because she was making the film I was making at the time, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and I suppose her desires were… She wanted more than a relationship, she wanted a proper relationship with me and I did not want that. I didn’t feel the same about her as she did me and I suppose from that moment on she became very, very angry and since then I have not spoken to Ms Barkin. Nor has Ms Barkin spoken to me.”
Hmm. So she was vindictive because he turned her down? He’s essentially making it sound like his D turned her crazy, y’all. That kind of excuse is not the best look when it comes to denying someone’s claims of violence — but like we said she didn’t make specific claims, she’s mostly just shown support for Amber.
Speaking of Amber, Johnny had more to say about that relationship on Friday, as well.
In response to his ex’s description of his drug and alcohol abuse problem, he made it very clear Amber was not trying to get him to stop. If anything, the opposite! Describing her enabling behavior, he said:
“Ms. Heard kept whiskey, a bottle of whiskey, Bulleit bourbon, in the freezer for me. A shot would be poured when I arrived, even if Ms. Heard was asleep. When I arrived there would be a shot of whiskey on the nightstand.”
He also said “Ms. Heard” would even join in a bit on the cocaine:
“She would chop cocaine for me but she wouldn’t ingest it through her nose… she would rub it on her gum.”
In fact, according to Depp’s testimony, Amber was quite the abuser of drugs and alcohol herself. He claimed she drank “two or three bottles” of wine a night — which he fairly clarified was “normally two bottles.”
That is still a lot of wine. Sherborne also produced an email from 2013 in which Amber had invited her friends to come over and party, telling them “to bring some food, booze and drug of choice – yay.”
Drugs were clearly a constant for the couple; Johnny confirmed there were drugs at their rehearsal dinner and wedding.
He also accused Amber of secretly filming him for years to build up her “insurance policy.” He says one video she claims shows him on a violent rampage in 2016 was actually filmed while he was making The Lone Ranger in 2013.
Sounds like there’s still plenty more drama to come next week to us…
