With folklore, Taylor Swift finally has an indie record much cooler than anybody else’s — and she’s also breaking records left and right!
At this point, we’re used to anything TayTay releases being a total smash. But folklore, an album conceived, created and released in just four months during quarantine, has been such a critical and commercial success that it may well be a new peak in the superstar’s career.
And all by taking it back to basics…

In just a little over a week, folklore has already become the best-selling album of the year, selling 846,000 units — and remember, this is with no promo! Per Entertainment Weekly, it’s actually the biggest album debut of any artist… that is, since Taylor released Lover in 2019, which was the biggest album debut since Taylor released reputation in 2017.
The album has pushed the pop star’s already incredibly lauded career to impossible new heights. According to Billboard, she’s the first artist in history to have seven different albums sell over 500,000 copies in a single week, a record she previously shared at six with Eminem.
The album has also smashed streaming records, with all 16 songs appearing on Billboard’s Streaming Songs chart, topping Cardi B’s previous record of 14. (She also beat Cardi’s record for woman with the most songs simultaneously in the top 10 on the streaming chart.)
On top of all that, she’s also the first artist ever to have an album and a single (cardigan) hit #1 on the Billboard 200 and the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time.
Upon hearing the news of her musical milestones, Swift responded in the perfect way: with a gif of The Rock saying “oh my God” from San Andreas. LOLz!

Here are some of folklore’s other achievements, per Billboard:
Taylor now holds the record for most album #1 debuts among women, with 7 of her 8 albums debuting at #1 on the Billboard chart. (She’s tied with Janet Jackson at 3rd for total #1 albums by women, trailing only Madonna and Barbra Streisand.)
folklore had the largest streaming week for an album by a woman in 2020, and the third overall following Juice WRLD’s Legends Never Die and Lil Uzi Vert’s Eternal Atake. It’s also the second-biggest streaming week ever for a woman, following Ariana Grande’s thank u, next.
cardigan is Taylor’s fourth #1 on the Streaming Songs chart, making her the leader for women in most streaming #1s. She’s tied with Justin Bieber and Travis Scott for 2nd overall for streaming #1s (trailing Drake).
With the last great american dynasty coming in at #4 on the Hot 100 chart, she becomes the first woman with two simultaneous top-five debuts alongside Juice WRLD and Lil Wayne. With exile at #6, she’s got three simultaneous top-ten debuts, a feat matched by the likes of Drake, Lil Uzi, and J. Cole.

This is truly amazing! Considering we’re barely more than a week in to the folklore era, it seems like there’s also a very good chance that more records will be broken in the near future. And if Tay can do all this in just a few months of quarantine… well, what can’t she do???
Congratulations, Taylor!!!
