The hits keep on comin’ for Ellen DeGeneres.
This time, it’s in the form of SHOCKINGLY low ratings for her once-popular daytime juggernaut, The Ellen DeGeneres Show. And while it is summer rerun time for pretty much all daytime talk shows, Ellen’s included, you’d think her previous dominance of the market combined with a pandemic requiring endless self-isolation and stay-at-home quarantine orders would result in relatively strong viewership through the end of the summer, right?! Nnnnnope!!!

According to Nielsen ratings published over at The Wrap, Ellen’s eponymous talk show drew a 1.0 Live + Same day household rating for the final full week in July, ending on the 26th of the month. That’s a 9% drop from the prior week’s period AND a whopping 29% decrease from the same week last summer!
That’s nearly a third of her viewers just GONE!
That 29% decrease isn’t a fluke, either; the prior week in July also saw a 27% decrease from its comparable 2019 counterpart, so one thing is becoming very clear: reruns or not, people are turning Ellen off and tuning her out!
Is it the accusations of Ellen not being quite the nice gal she paints herself as?
Surely it’s no coincidence it was that exact same mid-July week where the biggest, most damning report of the talk show’s alleged toxic environment was first published for the world to read. And it’s only gotten worse since then as more and more employees come out with their stories.

Looks like the people are now voting with their television remotes!
Ellen’s 1.0 rating isn’t just super small — it’s actually historic. For one, it tied the New Orleans native’s show with The Steve Wilkos Show, hosted by Jerry Springer‘s campy former head security guard. Wilkos has never before tied Ellen in the ratings. Ouch!!!
It also put Ellen just behind Maury, which recorded a 1.1 Live + Same Day rating for longtime host Maury Povich. It’s been at least four years since Maury’s talk show topped Ellen in the ratings — and that was only when DeGeneres’ show was removed from contention altogether because it had gone on hiatus during the 2016 Summer Olympics!
Again, it’s worth pointing out the summer rerun caveat here, but all shows are going through that right now, and Ellen’s seems to be shedding viewers faster than almost any other production. Major mid-day shows like The Real and The Doctors are each down just 20% year-to-year compared to their 2019 rerun ratings, well ahead of Ellen’s collapse.

Innerestingly, Dr. Phil is actually doing even worse than the 62-year-old comedian, falling 33% year over year relative to last summer. What gives there?! Maybe a result of his own scandal earlier this year where he pretended to be a medical doctor and gave really bad coronavirus advice?
Regardless, as of now, Ellen is slated to return with new shows in early September. It’ll be really key to see how the ratings fare then, as productions come back for the fall and the embattled host and her staff must return and acknowledge the terrible summer they’ve had…
